Far Cry 4 Piracy Perspective

A tweet from Alex Hutchinson has a little perspective from the Ubisoft Montreal creative director on complaints about Far Cry 4 which turn out to be from pirates (thanks nin via Joystiq). Here's word:
PC players! If you're online complaining about the lack of FOV control ... You pirated the game.

Until it backfires on them...

I was stuck with the deliberate bug in Titan Quest where early in the first act, performance would go to crap and it would be unplayable. I went to the forums and was ridiculed and abused by posters and stuff alike for pirating the game, as it was deliberately included to kick in for hacked versions.

My problem, once I'd established with IL that I was a legitimate customer, was that securom was allowing the game to load but then insisting my disk was a copy and kicking in the deliberate corruption bomb once I'd start playing the game.

So yeah, while I'm happy for game companies to try and combat piracy, I get pissed as fuck when it affects their paying customers. If you can't discriminate well enough, don't fucking bother...

I got the same bug, but even though I bought the game I was using a fixed.exe because I didn't like having to change out CD's, so I guess it was meant for me.

Got nothing to do with being pirated. Significant bugs/lack of FOV were in release code of game. The day-one patch is basically mandatory and is the reason there was no prerelease review code for the PC version.

And according to TPB, the day-one patch was still released to pirates before Far Cry 4 even went live today.

The fixed .exe would have triggered it as well, but you are a paying customer... The disc was a pita, particularly when securom would refuse to read it a number of times, forcing you to eject/reload each time.

I can live with Steam, Origin, Ubisoft's abortion as long as they work as they don't require physical media which can be damaged. Putting in DRM that can backfire on legit users is just a bad idea because inevitably someone doing the right thing is going to get caught up with the pirates...

This. The newest crack apparently works fine. That said, it's still a hassle compared to owning the game legitimately. Having to go through multiple "proper" cracks before getting one that actually works is a nuisance and one of the reasons why I stopped pirating games. The absence of features like cloud saves, achievements, trading cards, automatic updates, etc, make pirated copies less appealing.

They're actually outing themselves and hoping no one notices or is too 'ashamed' or scared to come out and say, yeah, it's just a bug in the pre-release version.

Well, it's just bugs in the pre-release version. They posted a patch yesterday which fixed most of the issues (which was then distributed in up-teen different group 'fixes'). But to say they were deliberate to show who pirated it and who didn't? Cmon', you give them way too much credit! I'm sure they watch the torrent sites like anyone else. They saw the hassles people were dealing with that last few days and wanted to get a pat on the back for something they really had no hand in doing (except releasing a semi-broken game) and hoping most of the gaming public (sheep) wouldn't catch it...

And, btw, the 'new' release on the sites (as in, the retail version) has a FOV slider just fine, so I've been told...

Except for Far Cry 2, Far Cry 3, every Assassin's Creed, Rayman Origins, Blood Dragon, and Stick of Truth.
Games you probably have some pithy response for, but have basically universal acclaim on this board.

Universal Pictures once released a movie I hated, too, but I didn't hold an 8 year grudge.

You think my ban is because I didn't like a game? Have you not noticed the 15 years of its most pathetic gripe with piracy? And taking it out on us paying customers seems to be 100% okay with them... Even to be as bold and asnine as possible and purposely releasing a bugged game to its customers on purpose to hurt pirates? like they give a fuck? Insane you are.

So you were ridiculed and abused by posters...not the dev team.

It's widely known that the game had this problem. It was a problem with the DRM on legit CD copies. I may not be remembering this correctly, but I think it was actually the other way around...people that pirated the game didn't have this problem.

As for comparisons, I do recall the first few days after Tribes was released. It was hilarious seeing all the idiots that didn't even change their name before playing. They were all running around with "DaJackal" over their heads.
