Game Sessions Steam Trials Add Ryse Son of Rome

Game Sessions is a beta service which offers the chance to sample games on Steam. This features the ability to purchase full versions from within these sample sessions, and the system also supports game rentals. Ryse Son of Rome is the newest game they feature, saying Crytek is allowing players one trial of Crytek's action game that can run as long as 24 minutes. "We passionately believe that people will buy more games if they can try them first," explains Ed French, CEO of GameSessions. "With our free trial service our mission is to deliver more great game experiences to more players." They also claim compression-related download speed advantages:
GameSessions’ proprietary technology ensures publishers’ content is secure, so ensuring the best content can be available, and typically downloads games 3x* faster. The service also helps to avoid downloading games that won’t run well on users’ hardware, and final peace-of-mind comes from the guarantee of always playing a game before purchase.

Users can now download and play the free trial of the stunning ‘Ryse – Son of Rome’ on PC as part of the Beta 2 phase. More exciting titles will be added in the run up to the full launch of the service in early 2015.

* Benchmark tests show games reduced by 50% to 80% using GameSessions compression technology.

From GameSessions: To the everyone here who felt the trial was too short- just to let you know that we have discussed this with Crytek and we can announce that this will be increased to 60 mins.
Thanks to everyone for the feedback.

I think some of you have been unreasonable about Game Sessions.

I, for one, think that it is fantastic.

Oh, and here's something important.... DO NOT PIRATE ANY SOFTWARE THAT IS SUSCEPTIBLE TO MALWARE!

NO GAMES, APPLICATIONS OR POSSIBLY EVEN E-BOOKS!!!!!!!!

Only movies and music are safe.

The reality is I use the best anti-virus in the industry, ESET Nod32, a component to their Internet security suite Smart Security, and it reports serious malware with literally EVERY SINGLE GAME I tried pirating.

I, too, began to think that developers were encouraging pirating-as-a-trial for previewing software before giving away my precious money but DON'T DO IT!!!!!!

Unless, of course, you like having your credit cards stolen and your bandwidth used for a botnet....

If you've been pirating games for awhile now I would seriously consider formatting not only your relevant disk/s but also the master boot record and whatever the other thing is that could contain a rootkit (simple formats ARE NOT ENOUGH: you must rebuild the MBR and something else in a command prompt BEFORE wiping the general data and yes, it is not without risk, though I did it once and it worked beautifully).

Make no mistake: if you pirate binary data you are in serious trouble RIGHT NOW and you better do something quick!!!!!!!!

AT LEAST download a 30 day trial of Nod32/Smart Security and give your computer a REAL anti-virus scan!!!!! Chances are the format won't be necessary unless you've got some uber rootkit installed that ESET fails to detect despite support for such things with the best definitions and heuristics in the industry.

You can edit the advanced options of Smart Security/Nod32 to enable advanced heuristics (they pride themselves on having low false positives, of which I have experienced potentially not even one.).

I am not a schill!

I can see Steam killing this service on it's own network in a few days or so.

Why would they allow someone else to use their bandwidth and network and then give the sale to someone else?

Why? Can't you look at myriad of Let's Plays and other videos on Youtube? It is not really that hard to get a feel for how a game will play...

I read 'more' and 'exciting' together as one term. Maybe they meant it that way?

GameSessions is paid for by the modest share of revenue when you buy in-game. We don't charge the users or publishers anything for the trials.

Right now you do download a second time when you purhcase, but you can play on in the trial in the meantime. Shortly we'll be transferring the files over when you purchase so it'll make that just a patching process (it took us 7 minutes in test).

That'd be solid, and the ability to test a game is appreciated. Out of curiosity, how exactly does GameSessions make money off this? Do you get referral fees?

If the price was right and there was better integration with Steam then Game Sessions could be a really compelling service.

The fact that you get a steam key when you purchase is kinda silly. It means that you're going to have to download the game TWICE if you buy it off this service.

Obviously, this service is not meant for third world countries.

I have no idea why they say it's "24 minutes" when it actually gives you 30 minutes. And yes, while there are unskippable cutscenes there is actually a reasonable amount of gameplay.

The whole experience works quite well, though I have no interest paying £35.99, which is what they were asking for. The game is pretty decent for a casual game and performance is great but the thing that REALLY annoys me is the prerendered cutscenes. There is no excuse to prerender in-game graphics, especially when done at a fraction of the quality of the engine itself (it's 1080p and either 24fps or 30fps). It's extremely jarring to go from excellent, fluid 60fps graphics at 1600p to compressed, jerky 1080p video.

Ryse is a game that will be worth picking up on sale and the demo has helped me determine that. It isn't worth paying full price for.

GameSessions is a download of the whole game, to play on your own PC, not video of the game. You can play through the game exactly as you would normally until the time runs out.
We are working with publishers to make the trials reasonably long. Most are 1-2 hours.

this is EXACTLY what I was going on about earlier, if people could just try the damn thing, then no one would feel "duped" into buying something that didn't deliver. my solution was piracy where they don't provide a working demo. which i still stand behind, but this solution is almost as good. you just won't be able to see how well it plays on your system, as it's just video.

bring back motherfucking shareware. give the first hour away for free. and watch the levels of angry gamers start falling... hopefully :/
