Natural Selection 2: Combat Friday; Livestream Underway

Unknown Worlds website has details on Natural Selection 2: Combat, saying this will be released on Friday on Steam as a standalone game after originally being developed as a modification for Natural Selection 2, their multiplayer shooter. NS2: Combat turns Natural Selection 2 into an aliens vs. space marines MOBA, which they describe like so: "NS2: Combat includes seven different player-controllable lifeforms, a vault full of weapons and abilities, a stats system, full modding support and 5 original maps. Games last around 15 minutes and players may join and leave at any time. You can try unique abilities such as 'Devour', where the largest alien eats her enemies, or pilot the hulking mechanized 'Exo Suit' and punch aliens in the face." The chance for an extended look at the game is underway on Twitch where developer Faultline Games is in the midst of a 96 hour livestream marathon session to raise money for Médecins Sans Frontières' fight against Ebola.

So yeah, currently there are only 2 servers in use, and they have 200 pings.. the others are empty ;/ Guess it's only really worthwhile to check this out when it's actually out.

This game seems like it would be massive suckage with pings above 30 pinpoint accuracy hit-scan weapons and all that.... playing alien is fun

NS1 was a mod, you had to seek out, learn and play. The people playing it were generally more into the HL mod scene and much more willing to learn/read. That's the reason there were SO many good 1-3 hour long games, and dozens of jam packed servers.

NS2 was on the steam store. Had a terrible tutorial. Just putting it on the steam store left a bunch of people wanting to play CoD/BF3 in space with Aliens while not knowing how to play, it's a fps right they all play the same! Interest wains, popularity died.

My .02 on it... absolutely LOVED NS1, only put 16 hours into NS2... 16 hours was a long weekend in NS1.

NS2 bombed because it was a horrible engine and mostly a design regression from NS1.

And Combat was for scrubs.

Full disclosure, I'm the lead developer on NS2: Combat. This game is being made by members of the NS2 modding community that formed their own studio - Faultline Games. Earlier this year Unknown Worlds gave us the license and support to rewrite our old mod and make it polished enough to sell as a standalone game. It includes many new abilities, features and game modes.

We're still livestreaming now on Twitch if you have any questions...

Welcome to the boards, if you contact Blue directly via email he can grant you a developer 'tag' that changes the color of your forum nick. If you decide to stay a word of warning: we are a hard bunch that takes no bullshit from anyone. Be prepared for skepticism and criticism at every point of the way. There will be no asskissing here. However, what there will be are hard and honest perspectives and views that you will not find on any other forum or board. There are trolls here and there but they are easy to spot and the regulars usually destroy them with their own medicine before they get out of hand.
I have a nifty blue line!

I bought NS2 ages ago, and played it for a bit. Never could really get into it though too much, the main problem for me being the hit and miss of public games at least with regards to how the teams organize themselvces. It was virtually impossible to get a halfway decent commander. Still it had huge potential, especially with the tons of mods around.

With that said I will not be getting this, maybe at a sale at some point.

I thought it was free to NS2 owners but nope.

No, this game is not free for NS2 owners.
Combat is to NS2 as Half-Life 2 is to Counter-Strike: Source, or DayZ is to ARMA III.

NS2: Combat looks like NS2 because it exists in the Natural Selection universe. Think of it like Star Trek and Star Trek: The Next Generation. It uses the same engine and many assets from NS2, but the SPARK engine in specific has been gutted in many ways to allow Combat to be something more than just a mod. We've created additional lore in the game so you can understand what's been happening in the time period between NS2 and Combat.

sounds like bullshit to me but whatever.

For those who don't know, NS2 was a failure because the creator was emotionally attached to his original game design and ignored the numbers in front of his face: NS Combat was more popular and more fun than NS Classic.

He launched NS2 with just the classic game mode (which is only appropriate for organized teams) and it bombed.

Huge, huge, huge missed opportunity given how good asymmetrical gameplay can be, how he helped define some modern ideas about it, and how big it is getting NOW.
You're wrong about almost everything, except that NS Combat was more popular. That's true. But popular doesn't mean better, you know...

Every time I see an NS2 post, I think I need to play again. Played quite a bit at release, but not for a while now. Always seemed a bit of a struggle to find a good populated server with only somewhat-asshole people.

I think that was inevitable considering it was put together by a separate dev team. But if you'd like to think of it as a standalone expansion, it does come with several new maps and content such as the return of Onos' devour (IIRC you can actually mash a button to struggle when you're stuck inside and cause damage now), with the promise of new stuff on the way. Stuff which they probably would have included at release if they weren't timing it for Halloween, which is when the original NS mod was released 11 years ago.

Soooooooo... they are selling a mod for something that should have been part of the actual game on release.. am I getting this right?

Combat was the only mode I ever even played in NS1 ~.~

Good. I never understood how co_ maps were left out of the sequel... I love standard mode, too, but a large portion of the fun I had with NS was in combat. I think many others would agree, in fact I always had the impression combat servers were more popular.
