Subnautica Earliest Access

The Subnautica website now offers "earliest access" to Subnautica, as the struggle to find the proper language for the sale of work-in-progress games continues (thanks Rock, Paper, Shotgun). This carries a $35.00 price tag, and as their terminology implies, they are not touting this as a polished release at this point:
Hold it right there! Do you like seeing games when they are broken, buggy, and barely functional? Do you like seeing the gritty, gross guts of game development laid bare? If the answer is no, bash that browser back button! If the answer is yes, welcome: We’ve got a treat for you. Hold your breath, and come for a dive…

I'm inclined to *gasp* agree with Cutter on this. Not simply about its worth for the price, but about why a dev studio would want the public in on the prototyping stage of the game.

This is the phase where developers are brainstorming and rapidly creating and discarding ideas and iterating the main thrust of the game.

This isn't a part that should even be funded by people let alone inviting them to get in on it.

They need to nail down what they want to do and do a proper kickstarter/indiegogo campaign.

Most people have a hard enouhg time grasping Early Access. I don't even want to know what headaches and misunderstandings pre-alpha access would bring.

They don't skimp on warning ppl that it's early, that you kick/throw cash at them at your own risk and if you want a clean working game, avoid it like the plague...

I don't get the problem...

If they were trying to represent it as something it's not, or blowing smoke up asses, sure, but there's nothing wrong with making your pitch to perspective customers.

And Cutter, just because you subjectively don't think much of it doesn't mean a person would be a fool to go in for it. For the amount of angst it's earned, KS/crowdfunding has still delivered some great titles that otherwise probably would never have seen the light of day. You're not forced to open your wallet so I'm not sure why it offends you so.

I'm actually quite interested in this and would consider Kickstarting it, but the website is so vague on details.

If it's not at the early access stage, why not do a kickstarter for it? Or maybe an indiegogo?

Why would you even want the public in on this stage of pre-alpha development?

Thank you for that.

Couple of questions (in the prototype) can I repair the holes or close hatches to seal off sections?

I think characterizing it as $35 just for "this" is kind of silly, given that you also get the full game when it comes out and every version between this and the full game.

So for instance if you're sitting in a movie theater having payed $15 for tickets and $5 for snacks and you're watching a stupid trailer and you've only eaten a bit of your snack and you go "$20... for this? Lulz" I take it we would think you were a bit of a dope.

It would be akin to paying to watch a trailer and no idea if the actual film will ever be fully delivered, nevermind any good. But hey...fools and their money are soon parted.

And there is very clearly a budget game.

Analogies are rarely needed in game chat, the subjects are pretty well understood and/or are explainable at a common level without bringing another subject in as a reference. This isn't rocket surgery.

If they're allowing access this early, they could be pretty low on funds. That might make it more of an "if" it comes out than a "when." The earlier you let people in, the higher the risk of negative feedback from people ignorant of the process. See Citizen, Star for reference.

So for instance if you're sitting in a movie theater having payed $15 for tickets and $5 for snacks and you're watching a stupid trailer and you've only eaten a bit of your snack and you go "$20... for this? Lulz" I take it we would think you were a bit of a dope.

Your analogy is a poor one. This game isn't finished, but the movie is. The better analogy is buying a movie tickets and being allowed to see the script revisions, dailies, failed takes, bloopers, and scene animatics (here's one for Iron Man 3) of the movie as it's being made. Then once it's done months or years later, you can go see it having already paid for it.

Looks nice to me. And the purchase is helping fund it, hence the price.

I'd just ignore the naysayer.

The sales price when done will be cheaper, at first I was scoffing at a lot of things regarding the game, including price. But it does look interesting enough to keep an eye on.
