DCS: Su-27 Announced

The Fighter Collection announces the Sukhoi Su-27 "Flanker" will be the next aircraft added to DCS World, their free-to-play digital battlefield and will also be a free addition to DCS- Flaming Cliffs 3. Pre-purchases of DCS Su-27 are underway on the DCS e-shop, which carry a 20% preorder discount, a 20% bonus discount on a future purchase, and access to Su-27 beta testing beginning November 15th. Here's a video with a short work-in-progress look at the Russian fighter, including a depiction of Pugachev's Cobra, a demanding maneuver which can only be performed by a handful of the world's most advanced aircraft. Here's word:
The Su-27, NATO codename Flanker, is one of the pillars of modern-day Russian combat aviation. Built to counter the American F-15 Eagle, the Flanker is a twin-engine, supersonic, highly manoeuvrable air superiority fighter. The Flanker is equally capable of engaging targets well beyond visual range as it is in a dogfight given its amazing slow speed and high angle attack manoeuvrability. Using its radar and stealthy infrared search and track system, the Flanker can employ a wide array of radar and infrared guided missiles. The Flanker also includes a helmet-mounted sight that allows you to simply look at a target to lock it up! In addition to its powerful air-to-air capabilities, the Flanker can also be armed with bombs and unguided rockets to fulfil a secondary ground attack role.

Su-27 for DCS World focuses on ease of use without complicated cockpit interaction, significantly reducing the learning curve. As such, Su-27 for DCS World features keyboard and joystick cockpit commands with a focus on the most mission critical of cockpit systems.

Do I understand that correctly, that the Flanker will be a free addition to DCS world, along with the Frogfoot? So if you install DCS world you'll have two free planes to fly?

Nope. Its a free upgrade for people who already own Flaming Cliffs 3. Its not a full on DCS level module, its just a standalone version of the plane that is already in FC3 but features an upgraded professional flight model. Let me explain it like this. In DCS you have two flight models, a simplified flight model and an advanced flight model.

A full on DCS Mig21 or A10C for example feature full avionics and systems modeling together with an AFM.

Most FC3 planes feature a fraction of the modeled systems, but a few like the F15C and now the SU-27 are getting a flight model upgraded to the level of the full on DCS level modules. This is quite important since these planes now actually fly very realistically which IMO is the most important part that any sim should get right before anything else.
I have a nifty blue line!

I just wanted to echo bigspender. If you have any interest in military aviation, DCS is where it's at. I would describe the learning curve with these sims as quite long, but not overly difficult, and immensely rewarding. If you are willing to accept that it's going to take some learning, study, and practice before you get that first kill, then give it a shot, because while this sim makes you work at your proficiency, the thrill of getting that kill is unmatched. Heck, I always feel pleased with myself when I run through the start up sequence of an aircraft by heart and see the cold plane come to life, ready to fly and fight.

If anyone has ever had any slight interest in planes of any kind, I highly recommend this "game/simulation".
I've been playing for about 2 years now, but I came from the Battlefield 2/3 crowd, because I got tired of constantly trying to get into a plane or helicopter only to be shot down a few minutes later. So it's nice to have a game where you are constantly in the plane. And it also has the best community of any game, period, since most people this attracts are generally more mature than your typical gamer.

Even if you are worried about a learning curve, since this is technically a simulator, it is a very rewarding experience, but with many guides on steam and youtube, you can be dropping bombs and missiles in 5-10 minutes. My suggestion is to get a friend to learn with, that's what I did, and it made learning and experimenting fun.

You will however benefit from having some kind analog input, even a cheap $20 joystick will be better than a keyboard, as the physics apparenlty close the real thing, so it would be like driving a car in real life with arrow keys, do-able, but tedious.

DCS World actually has two planes for free already, the Su-25T attack jet, and a training (no weapons) version of the P-51D WWII fighter plane, called TF-51D.

The flanker pre-order is currently $7.99 but will be around $10 to buy if you get it after release, as is with the other planes in that category, such as the F-15C, A-10A, Su-25.

Or you can buy the Flaming Cliffs 3 pack, which includes 7 planes one of which is the Su-27(and it will be upgraded to the standards of this stand alone package once released).

Really great fun, and the cool thing about all of these flaming cliff series planes (whether you buy them in a pack or separate), is that they are quite similar in the way you control them in the game, so if you have played with the free Su-25T (which is actually one of the most versatile jets in the game) you can easily get a hang of the others.

Also, you might notice that the graphics in the trailer are very very nice. Well that is a directX 11 upgrade which is coming out in a month or so as well. (currently the game doesn't look quite this good).
