The impression that I'm getting is that it has a really slick production, but some mechanics and plot direction issues that some will dislike more than others. It's the sort of game that once you see through the magic to the workings beneath, depending on your predisposition and experience, might lose a lot of its charm. If, for instance, you lose the willing suspension of disbelief that allows you to play as though the alien is 'stalking' you through the ship, rather than just spawning in somewhere as a result of a algorithm (even if its very clever), that could take a lot away from the experience.

There are times I wish I didn't know how this stuff really worked, like when I was younger or maybe just more imaginative, and I could take what was on the screen at face value without seeing the strings and plywood backdrops creating the illusion.

Of course, I haven't played it, but I can very easily see this game either being terrible or brilliant, entirely depending on who is playing it.

Yeah IGN is catching a lot of shit for that. They took some guy who apparently is not even a survival horror fan, and then had him play through on "Hard" difficulty.

Serial everything-hater Jim Sterling on the other hand called it one of the best horror games he'd ever played.

Some very polarized opinions on this one.

I think this game will be well worth the price during a 50%-75% off sale.

Is that what it does? It has set spawns throughout the ship? Hmm. I didn't know that... but it sort of explains how it gets around the ship so quickly. I mean, I know it would take up a bit more memory and processing to actually have it path-find its way through the ship via actual nodes, but yeah... I can see how the set spawn points could be disappointing for some people. Interesting.

Allow me to point out that here is a AAA game with a strong (and fully dressed) female protaganist. Now I'll shut up.

Clearly the alien is a misogynist. Wry

Some of the reviewers were put off by the length, up to 20-25 hrs in some cases to finish the campaign. They probably thought they could finish the game in 8-10 hrs, then had to rush through to get the review finished on time when they realized it was so long.

Reddit has some feedback given by Dan Stapleton of IGN in regards to the person who did the review as well as more information as to why they came down on it harder than most. Sheds some light on a few key points such as AI and why it was played on Hard difficulty and is worth reading.

You just have to scroll down a little.

Clearly this game is a misogynistic male power fantasy made by cis white males. While the character may APPEAR to be a strong female protagonist, she is at the mercy of the clearly cis Xenomorph and made to be a perpetual victim.

Nope. The problem seems to be that it's fun to play hide and seek with the fucking Alien for the first five hours. After that it's supposed to turn into a nuisance due to being either way too predictable or the opposite where the Alien pounces you very randomly with lethal precision and no chance to defend yourself if you did not know what was coming.
It seems that the high scores are mostly coming from the reviewers who put in only a few hours and the low scores are coming from the folks who actually bothered to slog through (at least nearly) the entire game.
The complaints about the game being too long are mostly directed at the extremely repetitive gameplay. Playing hide and seek is only fun for that long and 20 hours seemed to be way too long for some folks.

The criticisms about the shifting goal posts and boring objectives make it sound a lot like Bioshock. And the alien spawning here and there sounds like the behavior of big daddies.

I'm pretty sure all reviewers played the game through to completion, as completing the critical path is standard practice. Seems to me that the reviewers who disliked the game are the ones who dislike pure stealth. After the first few hours, the scariness of the alien wears off and Isolation basically turns into a hardcore stealth game with a focus on avoidance rather than assassination. If you fuck up and get detected, there's no recovery. Some people don't like that kind of stealth.

It's colonial marines all over again

Also haven't we been saying this all along? How can a game like this be 10 to 20 hours? There is only 1 alien, and they sure as fuck can't code a properly fun AI for that, with wall walk and ceiling hangs and all that. (and more to the point, in the dark ship you'd never even see the damn thing coming if they got the AI right)

So depending on the situation, they either have good AI then it sucks because of manual checkpoint saves ie you will die, constantly, or they have bad AI and it sucks because it's not scary. You can not make this game in any way not suck, it's by design.

And I don't ever play games that are not designed to be FUN. Fun as in, not being stupidly frustrating by design. Also hiding from 1 Alien on 1 ship for 20+ hours... is not what I call a smart-gameplay decision Even if they added robots and humans as bullet/resource sponges....

It is what it is I guess. It lets Alien fans live out that dream of being in that universe or like being in the movie. The design of the game seems to lean towards hardcore, where they tried to make you feel as hopeless as possible. I would hope CA continues to improve it after launch.

No one ever said they don't exist, but keep misunderstanding the argument. Here's one of how many released of late?

So when will you be happy Beamer? When every single game makes females Alyx Vance?
