Gauntlet Released

Elf needs food badly! Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment announces they've thrown down the gauntlet with the release of Gauntlet, a remake of the arcade classic for Windows PCs. Here's word:
“This new digital version of Gauntlet innovates on past titles while staying true to the brand’s legendary four-player format,” said David Haddad, Executive Vice President, Publishing Operations, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. “Multiplayer gameplay is at the core of Gauntlet’s appeal and now gamers have the option to play with friends and family locally and online.”

Players select from four classic fantasy-based characters: Warrior, Wizard, Valkyrie, or Elf. Each character has its own distinctive play style and unique strengths and weaknesses. Upon selecting a playable character, the gameplay is set within dungeons where the object is to fight through the chambers slaying evil creatures and completing challenges. An assortment of special items can be located in each dungeon that can restore the player’s health, unlock doors, and shift the odds in the player’s favor with magical relics which can aid the player in surviving longer in the Gauntlet. The enemies are a vast assortment of fantasy-based monsters, including ghosts, grunts, demons, spiders, sorcerers and skeleton warriors.

Players can improve their heroes’ abilities and powers by unlocking achievements called “perks.” Multiple difficulty settings add to the game’s replayability.

After playing for awhile I am no longer amused by the old school feel of the shared camera. The camera shifts sometimes take too long even after someone moves which gets extremely frustrating. I hope they patch it out. I get that they wanted people working together as a group but they already lock many of the rooms until you clear the enemies and the shared camera gets extremely tedious after awhile. I play with a group of RL friends and we've all changed our minds on this after the past few days. I can't even imagine trying to pub the game with it.

I got to play a little last night. You can play with keyboard and mouse or gamepad, which is nice. There doesn't seem to be any way of communicating with each other unless you are using TS or Steam with friends. The gold rushing is real frustrating. If you aren't quick, you lose out on the gold fast. Looks ok and runs well but I wish you could zoom in just a bit. I think the game will be more fun with friends.

People are complaining that many standard PC game 16:10 resolutions are not supported. For example 1080p or 1920x1200. Mouse and keyboard is not re-bindable either. Can someone confirm?

I am playing at 1080p no problem, not sure about 16:10. Controls are not rebindable through the games menus, not sure about a text config file. Game is a blast and very cool, recommend a gamepad.

My daughter and the twins would play this game for hours on end, all three of them at one keyboard. I think I still have the old 5 1/4 disk stuffed around somewhere with the DOS version on it.
That's what I was hoping for. Something to play the kids. This looked too gory though if I recall the first trailer.

There's a box to select to disable the gore.

Also, I'm a fan of the original, and I'm finding this new version super fun.

Slightly off-topic but still relevant since it is basically an indie game. I hope Blue includes a few Wasteland2 reviews for Wednsday's review section. Im having a surprising amount of fun with Wasteland2 so far. It's scratching that tactical itch, just like the XCOM remake did, and it has atmosphere in spades...

Don't know about bindings, but word is that it supports standard resolutions including 1920x1200, but sometimes the resolution list doesn't all fit on screen and there's nothing to indicate that it scrolls. People are able to use the arrow keys to move down and access the resolutions past the bottom of the list.

Great, now let's get Golden Axe, Magic Sword and Gain Ground modernized and released.

Then you can add T-Mek(!) and the vector graphic Star Wars and everything old will be new again!

We already have most of the top pinball tables available ... we just need those cabinet games.

RASTAN!!!!!
Yeah! I love its theme song! Golden Axe 1's too. So many good old games.

They did remake Golden Axe for PS3 or something, but it sucked? I played its arcade and IBM PC DOS ports a lot!

Got it. Had to. Guantlet II was my all time favorite arcade game. I've been wanting to buy a cabinet for a long time. One day, when I have $2500 to spare, I will get one.

Anyway, loved Gauntlet Dark Legacy as well. So I go this. So far it's pretty cool. It's probably better with other people. Still getting used to it.

Elf shot the food! Now why would you do that?

of course, part of what made the game great was that you were always there with 3 other people, wether you knew them or not, and you were always having a great time on a single large screen. It looks a lot more Diablo like than I think I'd want to play. Also, I hate clickfests. Which is why I hate Diablo games. (I think I got 5 minutes into Diablo 3 before I decided "Yup, I've been over this game for 12 years or more already")

Without an Arcade controller, and without having everyone on the same screen... what makes this game different from any other popular item right now? Or was it just the people with the Gauntlet title saw the ties to it from those crazy popular "MOBA" games and said "Hey, let's put the name of their grand-daddy on one"
