New GeForce GPUs & Drivers

New GTX 980 and 970 GPUs are now available from NVIDIA, and you can find an introduction to the new hardware on the GeForce website and there are evaluations from a bunch of sites in today's hardware review section. To support the new cards, the GeForce website now offers new WHQL-certified version 344.11 drivers, which also add support for some new and upcoming games. Here's word: "The new GeForce 344.11 WHQL drivers are now available to download automatically through GeForce Experience, and from GeForce.com. These new drivers give GeForce GTX owners the ultimate gaming experience in the latest blockbuster titles, including Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, The Evil Within, F1 2014 and Alien: Isolation, and add support for the brand new, Maxwell-powered GeForce GTX 980 and GeForce GTX 970, the world's most advanced graphics cards."

When are these prospected to come out?

I'm not sure nvidia has even talked about shrinking the process...

Yeah, but knowing Nvidia, they'll just release the 1080 and 1080ti for a long while. I'm not in that league.

If I were you, I'd wait until probably next year for the 20nm refresh. Hell, I've waited all this time with a 580, and it's definitely time, but a 770? You'll hardly notice.

The 970 is incredible...I find it mind-blowing that many review sites are saying "yeah it's good" or "not bad!"...what are they smoking? 145W TDP with 4GB stock, which is ridiculous, hitting (or exceeding) Titan performance at stock, and it's putting out +14% performance on Fire Strike with a moderate overclock. It's closing in on my 2x760 score and my cards use over double the wattage. As far as I'm concerned it cleans the table and is certainly my #1 suggestion for builds...I wish I had the money, I'd get two of them.

Those are also just reference cards btw. I never get reference cards, normally eVGA gets a hold of these and makes even faster and cooler running.

Though i agree with you, I understand the reaction of reviewers. In terms of real world performance, its close to your 2x760 or my 2x670...overclocked 780 ti reviews from last year pretty much had the same performance in terms of fps but like you alluded to, there is more to performance reviews than raw fps.

There are certainly some niche scenarios at that resolution it makes sense for but I was speaking more generally. If I was gaming at 1080p I'd wait for the 20nm refresh but to each his own

Either way I'm very happy with the 970 and 980, great cards and the prices are surprisingly modest for Nvidia. 4k gaming for under $700, craziness.

Well I mean its up to you of course but you can get 60fps from a lesser card in most titles, especially if you back off Ultra settings/detail maxes. There are of course outlier titles so its hard to account for everything. In general 1080p isn't very demanding and I'm sure there will be a 960 at some point too for 1080p configs. This kind of card is better for a 1440p+ type setup IMO.

Your advice applies to novice or low end gamers. I don't agree with this for the more demanding 1080p gamers. For 1080p @ 120+hz we certainly need cards like these new ones. Also many people are sensitive to framerate dips so in their case a faster card makes a difference. Also people buy newer cards for upcoming games that will be much more demanding @ 1080p, especially at higher/est quality settings. 1080p can still be a good resolution for these high end cards!

Perpetual debt is slavery.

Guys, what about this?

Gigabyte G1 SOC

looks nice, i wish you could achieve these temps in a "blower" fan config cause blowers are much better for SLI/xfire configs, i have a bunch of these 3x fan gigabyte 280x's and you can't xfire with them very well, the top one always gets way too hot, even when well-spaced and well ventilated.

i will be getting on of these, or waiting for possibly the evga aftermarket cooler. will not buy stock, as they've already shown that the 980 self-throttles to keep below 85 degrees. fuck that.

Of course, it costs considerably more than the reference design, and, of course, it's already sold out.

MSI 980 G1 on Amazon

I do like the two 8 pin connectors, leaving room for more voltage should you need it when you overclock beyond its factory overclock. This looks like the one to get for me, although, I also like Asus's offering.

I'm not ready for 4k yet, I'll wait for a die shrink that's suppose to hit next year.

This will probably be the entry level card needed to make VR actually playable since you need solid 60fps.

I second the recommendation of buying an Asus or MSI with higher end components and much quieter cooler than reference boards. I have an Asus and really like how quiet it is.

It's worth noting that the 970 has a lot of headroom for OCing too, a few sites already had it surpassing the 980 in some benches.

O.O

some sites are getting 1500+ MHz(!!!) on their 980 samples. I would guess the extreme OC versions with custom PCB's will break 1600. holy....

I definitely buy with the future in mind, hence my card still being a 570

You're suggesting the 970 is an overkill upgrade?

Also, my MSI 570 OC runs pretty quiet until intense load. Might have to grab from MSI again

My biggest problem is a GTX 680 that only has 2GB VRAM. Honestly, 4GB will probably be an issue in a year or two as well. They should have released the cards with at least 6GB. I would be much better off if I had waited to purchase a 4GB 680, so perhaps my best course of action is to wait for a 6GB+ version of the 970 or 980.
