New GeForce GPUs & Drivers

New GTX 980 and 970 GPUs are now available from NVIDIA, and you can find an introduction to the new hardware on the GeForce website and there are evaluations from a bunch of sites in today's hardware review section. To support the new cards, the GeForce website now offers new WHQL-certified version 344.11 drivers, which also add support for some new and upcoming games. Here's word: "The new GeForce 344.11 WHQL drivers are now available to download automatically through GeForce Experience, and from GeForce.com. These new drivers give GeForce GTX owners the ultimate gaming experience in the latest blockbuster titles, including Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, The Evil Within, F1 2014 and Alien: Isolation, and add support for the brand new, Maxwell-powered GeForce GTX 980 and GeForce GTX 970, the world's most advanced graphics cards."

I run at 1080p with at least 2xAA with a 570 but don't get 60fps in newer titles.
You're suggesting the 970 is an overkill upgrade?

Also, my MSI 570 OC runs pretty quiet until intense load. Might have to grab from MSI again

Well I mean its up to you of course but you can get 60fps from a lesser card in most titles, especially if you back off Ultra settings/detail maxes. There are of course outlier titles so its hard to account for everything. In general 1080p isn't very demanding and I'm sure there will be a 960 at some point too for 1080p configs. This kind of card is better for a 1440p+ type setup IMO.

Some people prefer to spend a bundle up front and not have to worry about it for 4 years though so to each his own. I'm grabbing a 970 to OC and drive a 1440p config but if it was just my old 24" 1080p Dell then I would just wait a bit and see what else pops up.

its pretty silly to generalize that much.. there are so many variables that would make it worthwhile upgrade

maybe its complete overkill for YOU.. but you arent everyone in the entire world

If you want quiet/cool I would go for the Asus Strix or MSI TwinFrozr. The former doesn't even run its fan until its under load and is relatively quiet. MSI made really good quiet models last gen too.

Sweet. I shall await the eVGA 980 Superclocked w/ACX cooler.

That 970 is priced to move. $330 + a new release. Wow. I think the 980 is too expensive, but that 970....

Where is the card + new release? Only from EVGA directly? Trying to check their website, but it's crashed.

This generation, I'm going for a card with a quiet cooling solution. My 570 sounds like a mini dustbuster (although not as bad some cards back in the day).

It's worth noting that the 970 has a lot of headroom for OCing too, a few sites already had it surpassing the 980 in some benches.

I'm with you on that mate. I was waiting for the standard issue $4-500 even $600 and checked some sites and, sure enough, $329 on newegg for example, EVGA GTX 970 4GB with their aftermarket cooling, etc.

I'm very surprised-- this is damn aggressive. I'm impressed-- may have to pull the trigger on this for a second system replacing a GTX 570. Hell even my GTX 680 may get replaced.

Found some 1080P benches, avg around an 18% increase from 770 to 970.

Yeah, I'm probably not buying an upgrade at this time. Seems like the next big HW drop is when/if and if good VR drops on us and it being 1440+, probably pair the VR device and GPU up then.

What I'm toying with is the new NVidia Shield and streaming to it for late night bed gaming pleasure. I really have dug playing BGEE on my android with BT mouse when I'm not on my PC. Perhaps moving up to a Shield with native Android and Streaming PC, I'll have a pretty cool "new thing". For example... Wasteland 2.

Anyone know if the GTX 770 is actually any better then the new GTX 970 card? I've looked over the stats, and yes the 970 does have a little better specs compared to the GTX 770. so, im wondering which card is actually better.

One other thing I did notice. does the newer cards handle power better?

The 770 has two 8 pronged plugs where the new 970 has gone back to the two 6 pronged plugs. so is this new card now more efficient with power?

The information you are looking for is here: http://www.geforce.com/whats-new/articles/maxwell-architecture-gtx-980-970

Spoiler: 970 is better and has much better performance per watt.

See post 9. I was not seeing on benches I looked at, twice that of a 770 as another have mentioned here and linked to one of the places I took into consideration. I'm showing more like a 25% increase, that said, all these new benches are with ultra high rez's and we need to see perhaps what is the difference with that over 90% of us have as display rez.

The 970 is significantly better than the 770, almost twice as fast in some benchmarks and usually at least a 20% bump in others. It also runs cooler and quieter while using equivalent power.

It also depends on what games you play and what resolutions obviously. If you're just running at 1080p you don't need any of this stuff, its complete overkill.

Thinking of getting in on the 980. That will be a pretty impressive upgrade from my aging 3gb 580, which was $700 at the time it came out, and it's like double the power draw.

But the 28nm... I dunno. Should I buy now so I can play GTA5, or wait until the 20nm variants come through? OR buy now, then sell when the new ones arrive...?

These things are already pretty powerful, running very cool and have low power draw for the performance. I'm not waiting, there's always something better around the corner in the tech industry. With TSMCs constant yield issues who knows when we'll even see them.

770 vs 970, seeing about a 24% increase on average with a load temp about 15% cooler and wattage nearly the same, slightly more on the 770. For $330 that's pretty good.

The 980 is a even a larger difference. Its faster/cooler than the 780Ti AND cheaper.
