Out of the Blue

Funny, it was not that long ago that I gave up setting my right mouse button to "move forward" in configuring for first-person shooters, and Batman just started a thread on the topic of FPS configs. I've gotten to the point where my set-up is almost perfectly vanilla, which makes it easy to set up new games, but Bats' approach is pretty different, which may have practical advantages. Thoughts? Are you a conformist like me or an innovator like Bats?

You mean the navbar on the left? Dang, it still has a link for .plan files fingering. It's great that it's still here for sentimental value though..

Yeah there's several different nav bars, much of it outmoded. The PDA link still makes me chuckle a bit. The lan party link makes me nostalgic though.

Yes, but they basically vanish after two days, (or a week if it's large enough to be in the popular threads category) and our thinking at the time was that this caused certain hotly debated topics to keep spilling over from comment section to another, like the current #gamergate (my apologies for using that terrible term) discussion is doing.

So we figured that if we had a forum, we'd all just take that kind of stuff to the forum so we didn't all keep repeating the same points in 5 different comments sections.

It never really happened, unfortunately, so Frans/Blue did quite a bit of work for little pay-off. Sorry about that, Blue.

The discoverability on the forums is fairly poor (the site in general has a very "busy" dual nav with many outdated aspects that could be removed). Normally if you want people to use a forum, you have to drive traffic there. That's even more true on a site like this where you also have a competing comment system. It also needs to have the features people are used to which the forum here does not. I don't use the actual forums here because of poor visibility, lack of modern features and the prevalence of the comment system.

Third party integration like Disqus would be a decent option if they don't have the time or resources but it seems like most users here are strongly adverse to any change (good or bad) so I think its more likely things will keep going as is I'm not unhappy with that, I enjoy the community and appreciate the news aggregation but I would also love to see some modern features and would be happy to help out if it was needed.

I'm way more traditional myself - RMB is saved for alt. attack, zoom, or something else involved with combat. I'm strictly a WASD guy.

Because the front page shows two days worth of news. Most Comment discussions only last as long as the article is on the front page. The forums proper exist on the off chance somebody wants a longer discussion. That being said, I don't know if I've ever actually used the forums proper.
Holly molly, there *is* a forum? I'm just discovering it now... Weird. Kinda like discovering something in your own garden although it's been here for 5 years..

for a decade from 1997 to 2007 or so i used only the arrow keys for movement in shooters, but then i switched over to the WASD keys to conform to the masses. also saves me from moving my keyboard every time when i game.

i believe unreal started that shit. i know it's been the default setting in some games i've played. also correct me if i'm wrong, but i think thresh played that way too. at least, the fact that some famous gamer used RMB-fwd rings a bell.

Not sure, but if you look at google, there are a LOT of people that are upset that games don't allow for config of RMB as forward.....

I was one of those upset people when it came to GTA IV. They made the RMB the non-changeable control for hanging up the cell phone. I had to start using the thumb button to go forward (which actually works quite well).

Wait... what?!? RMB for forward? That's for Alt-Fire or ADS, you madmen.

Also, consider using the numpad instead of WASD. Far superior, translates well to separate keypad controllers too, instead of having the weird offset keys of WASD or EDSF.

I use WASD cuz that's what I'm used to. But I don't play competitively, so I've never been forced to try different setups. Bats does pretty well in multiplayer, so sounds like his unique setup works well for him.

The Logitec G13 and the Razer Orbweaver both look pretty cool though. The WASD setup weakness is the lack of fine movement control which these controllers address.

ESDF > WASD

Seriously, it's great having the little "nub" on the F key so you always know your hands are in the right position. Gives you easier access to more keys, too.

If you search for a very specific parameter of anything you will find confirmation bias for it. I really doubt that those people represent any statistically significant number.

Before anyone gets upset, I don't think that means people shouldn't have options. Let people bind things however they want, controls are all about preference. If people want to bind movement to a USB foot pedal then whatever, doesn't affect me.

Wait you make it sound like you look up by pushing the mouse up. I thought the reverse was true with inverted Y, whereby you push up on the end of a balance beam where the fulcrum makes the other end go down, or as if you're up against a wall, pushing up in order to move yourself down. Does one of us have it backward? I push down to look down, as in your example of compensating for gun recoil. Did I read all that totally wrong?

i think i said it correctly? now you've got me doubting myself. we shouldn't use words like "up" or "down" to describe how we push/pull the mouse. i pull the mouse towards me to make my in-game character look up, i push my mouse away from me to make it look down, so yeah i fucked up lol, keeping recoil down would be harder for me, but easier to snap up to a hostile on a catwalk above me.
