Transverse Announced

Piranha Games announces Transverse, a flight-based, sci-fi MMORPG from the creators of MechWarrior Online. They say a variety of preorder options are offered on the Transverse website, but don't mention there's a crowd-sourced funding campaign there as well, which has an ultimate goal of one million dollars. Here's a reveal trailer and the announcement:
Humanity has begun its first tentative steps beyond its home solar system. However, the journey has not been entirely peaceful...

From the creators of MechWarrior Online comes Transverse, a galactic flight-based MMORPG set in a persistent, distant sector of the galaxy where industry, science and combat shape humanity's interstellar progression.

When the division between humans on Earth and the trans-humans of the outer colonies threatened to develop into a system-wide war, the development of an interstellar jump drive offered an alternative and the trans-humans in the outer colonies were given the drive and a choice: integrate or emigrate.

They chose isolation.

Now immortal through the ability to transfer their consciousness into different host bodies, the trans-humans have multiple hosts that can be modified and improved to advance a pilot's skill. The future path humanity takes among the stars is in your hands.

With incredibly detailed ship and station construction, massive solar-system-wide player events and real-time, physics-based combat, Transverse puts the power in the pilot's hands. A fluctuating, real-time economy fueled by industry drives trade in a dynamic resource ecosystem, and player-generated contracts and missions can shift the balance of power at any given moment. Your reputation as a pilot throughout the galaxy will be judged by how well you fly, and the decisions you make.

Transverse is now available for pre-order via a variety of tiers starting at $30 USD.

Oh boy. Piranha Games Inc have pumped MWO and they will be dumping it soon without delivering on the promises made to the founders who paid for their development of the game. I still remember the rage about the broken promises that were made and this article summarizes it nicely:
http://www.gamefront.com/mechwarrior-online-forum-ragesplosion/

Don't trust what Piranha games says.

Notice that they disabled comments in their YouTube video announcing the game. And I see that the down voting of the video has begun in earnest. They should have disabled that as well but instead.

Taken in isolation the video is fine and I'm always happy to see a new entry in the space sim genre. They've failed to answer the most important question, though, which is "why should anyone back this game instead of Star Citizen?" Also... I'm totally burnt out on the whole pre-release/crowd-funding fad.

But it's impossible to take the video in isolation because of MWO. I still play MWO regularly; I have no doubts that PGI is capable of delivering a playable game with fun mechanics, but their track record with "bigger stuff" is abysmal. I expect this game will deliver a decent space combat arena in short order and then stall on the whole "universe" thing. I'd be delighted to be proven wrong, but... most likely I'll be too busy playing Star Citizen to notice.

This is what gave the perceived notion that people aren't interested in space sims. No one is interested in low budget shovelware.

I feel like this is not gonna go over well MWO perfectly demonstrates that this company should never be let loose on a MMO. what with all the disgruntled MWO founders and what not...

I very politely asked for a refund on MWO. I didn't expect I would receive one, but I actually got scolded for asking. That was amazing.

So yeah good luck with this one.

As much as I wish it weren't true, I have to agree with you on this. My very first thought on reading this announcement was exactly that. I never paid anything into MWO (thankfully) but I did play it a while and followed the community. I had considered paying in but after seeing things like the Clans...it was pretty clear what they were doing.

Also... I'm totally burnt out on the whole pre-release/crowd-funding fad.

There have been some pretty good games, Shadowrun is now good with dragon fall. FTL / Faster than light and Shovel knight were pretty damn good.

There are other promising projects like Project eternity and wasteland, what's going to happen with these is probably - their first outings will be mediocre/average and they'll get better in their next iteration.

Basically developers are re-learning developing these style games, the same kind of learning curve the shadow run developers went through. This has always been the case even in console land, developers have a learning curve as the re-adjust to developing a kind of game.

I'm also hoping Next car game turns out ok because Ridge racer Driftopia wasn't bad, it was basically what Ridge racer unbounded should have been in the gameplay department. Felt like one of those arcade racers in the old arcades. I had fun doing the leader boards and racing against other real players, since I was in the top 10 on a significant # of tracks.

The demo they released for next car game was decent (the one with the jumsp, physics cannon and barrel).

I figured out pretty quickly what the business model was. Selling mechs. I figured that out when all the new updates mostly had new mechs as the only new content.

Stupid voice over:
"It's 2315...we live at the edge of the known universe."

Stupid heritage:
"Piranha Games...makers of Mechwarrior Online"

Stupid pricing model:
"a variety of tiers starting at $30 USD"

Disappointed *sigh*

Is it really too much to make a real Mechwarrior game? In the vein of MW2 Mercenaries?

Indeed. Mechwarrior as an MMO was a shitty idea from the start. They should've made a tribute to Mechwarrior 2 instead, a single-player game of epicness.

Unfortunately nobody can really make a game that feels as good as MW2, because it used an excellent engine with flight sim physics which were military grade. Because the dude who wrote that engine used to make military grade simulators.
