Volition Reveal Friday

A PAX Prime panel on Friday will feature a one hour "quiz show" with Volition that will culminate in a project reveal, which may correlate to word last month that the developer was adding around 100 employees. The description of this is pretty low-key, but the title of the panel plainly calls this a "Quiz Show Hour with Volition - Project Reveal & Prizes." This runs from 1:00-2:00 pm EDT, so we should know more by early Friday afternoon. Here's word:
The developers behind the Saints Row franchise invite you to participate in a quiz show hour with Natalie Lander, the voice of Kinzie! At the end of the panel, we'll show you exclusive gameplay, art, and details for an upcoming project from Volition.

PANELISTS:
Aubrey Norris [Brand Director, Deep Silver], Steve Jaros [Creative Director, Volition], Natalie Lander [VO Actress, Volition], Jim Boone [Producer, Volition]

The Freespace campaigns were awesome but I think too many companies now want the revenue tools that multiplayer provides.

I just hope its not an MMO based on Freespace. Jesus that would suck major balls. All I want is a worthy successor to one of the best single player games ever.
I have a nifty blue line!

Isn't ED going to be releasing with an editor?

Given the isane amount of money and interest in Star Citizen I''l hedge my bet and go with a Freespace re-boot.

I somehow suspect it's not Freespace...
Interplay still owns the trademark.

USPTO

And there was a Freespace Easter Egg in Saints Row 4, in case anyone is not clear on whether Volition will make another Freespace.

Release FS3
NOT GOING TO HAPPEN

Most likely their next game is going to be another open world game, given how good they are at the genre.

I'm going to say it's going to be an online FPS called Red Faction: Heroes. It'll have 64 person multiplayer with all the trimmings: multiple game modes, weapon unlocks, perks, destructible terrain, etc. Think Call of Duty on Mars.

Either that or SR5. Sorry to be so cynical.

It's OK, this is Bluesnews, cynicism here is par for the course lol

Do you even need Freespace anymore with ED on the way?

While I love Elite Dangerous, yes, you do still need Freespace out there. They are drastically different styles of game.

Elite is very economy driven and is built around a sandbox model of either going out and hunting NPC or Players or finding the best trade routes.

Freespace is your classic X-Wing/Tie experience, full combat missions with wingmen and massive capital ships duking it out with each other while you dodge the crossfire. I'll still never forget the first time I saw the massive Shivan corvette in a mission in a nebula, it was an intense reveal of the new enemy.

Although at the same time I feel like EVE Valkyrie will also deliver this kind of experience so I'm not all that worried if Freespace doesn't get a sequel even though I'd like to see one.

Absolutely. FS focused on a WW2-esque style of combat with giant carriers with killer weapons and flak coverage and little ships buzzing around them. The scale was significantly different and the gameplay style for ED looks drastically different.

Imagine if dude gets on stage, picks up the mic and says "Freespace", then just drops the mic and leaves. That would be the most awesome thing, in the history of awesome. And I'm not sure the universe is prepared for the nerdgasm that would follow.

If by nerdgasm you mean mostly quiet people, then sure.

I know it's hard to believe, but Freespace 2 is a month shy of being 15 years old. A significant chunk of gamers, especially the kind that attends things like PAX, will have never played it, and will have no idea even what it is.

What's crazy is that the engine is still good with moderate work after all these years. Check out BSG: Diaspora for a jaw-droppingly good sim of Battlestar Galactica.

The open source community has made FS2 still graphically relevant and the gameplay is probably the best I've ever experienced.

I would be thrilled unto death if it was a new Freespace. I understand some would say, "Oh they're just jumping on the space sim bandwagon because of Star Citizen!" And if they are, so what? I've missed that sense of epic space opera combat that Freespace delivered. And I want that storyline finished once and for all, dammit! Either the Shivans go down or the TVA does, and I want to know which.

Freespace 3 would completely suck the oxygen out of the room that Star Citizen is dwelling in. I'd completely not care about SC any more.

We said the same things about Carmageddon for the longest time, but lo and behold, Stainless got the rights back and are making a game that is shaping up very nicely indeed.

They could always make a "spiritual successor" or whatever, I'd be cool with that.

I've been screaming that for years, and wish they'd KS. Spreefrace: Attack of the Evil Grivans. Sign me the fuck up!
