Ships Ahoy - OTTTD

Surprise Attack Games announces the release of OTTTD on the Humble Store and on Steam for Windows, OS X, and Linux. The game's full title sums it up well, as OTTTD stands for Over the Top Tower Defense. This launch trailer offers a look, and here's a description:
Like explosions? Love giant, flying, undead sharks? Then OTTTD is the game for you for you! Alternatively, if you’d like a strategy game that cleverly blends tower defence & RTS genres for a tactical challenge across an action-packed campaign then OTTTD will scratch that itch.

We describe the game as “Spaceballs meets Starship Troopers”. But anyone under 30 has no idea what Spaceballs is (their loss) so we fall back on “It’s an anything-goes TD game that doesn’t take itself seriously.”

Games that give you increasing amounts of "coins" when you pay more always give me pause.

Hey, it's the free-to-play model, only you have to buy the game first! Let me know how that works out for you!

A shame too. I love TD, and this looks right up my alley, but hell if I'll support this pricing model. This is a $15 game, which I'd gladly pay for.
RIP RedEye9. We miss you.

According to the Dev on the Steam Forums:

"Sorry if this has caused any negative impressions - there's no "pay to win" of any kind intended here. I'll try to clarify what's what..

The bonus currency is pretty minor as just meant as a little extra thanks - by the time it matters, it won't have affected your campaign progress too much.

Similarly the exclusive items, aside from the nice looks, will be most relevant early on. They may make it easier to find your ideal team setup/loadout as well. The XP armor is specifically for those people that love to grind on purpose, even when they don't need to.

By the mid campaign though, I'd expect everyone to more or less be on equal footing regardless of the version you're playing, where you need to make good strategic choices with a well balanced team in order to progress.

The standard edition of the game has you covered if you just want to the core experience as we designed it. The mobile version of the game doesn't contain any of that exclusive stuff so the game was not in any way designed around those items. They're just there as a bonus for those interested."

i'm considering buying it, as i love TD games... $8 seems fair.
