F1 2014 & 2015 Announced

Codemasters announces the roadmap for their Formula One series of racing games, saying F1 2014 will come to Windows, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 on October 17th, and also revealing plans for a 2015 installment in the series to follow for Windows, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. They offer this announcement trailer and some screenshots showing off F1 2014 and say the game that follows will hopefully not be so late in the year, in spite of how it moves the series forward. “Our title for the new generation formats will mark a huge step forward for the F1 series," explained creative director Stephen Hood. "We want to be out there earlier in the season and deliver new season content updates digitally as the 2015 season progresses; it’s very exciting for the series and our players." Here's word on both games:
F1 2014 is the culmination of five years of experience developing officially licensed, award-winning FORMULA 1 video games and delivers fans the most accessible experience yet. F1 2014 will incorporate this season’s seismic rule changes – the most significant in the sport’s 60 year history – including new aerodynamic regulations and turbocharged power units. All but two teams have changed their driver line-ups and new circuits have been added to the roster. Players will experience how 2014’s radically different new cars feel to drive as the season’s cars, circuits and teams are authentically represented.

F1 2014 also delivers a range of enhancements to create the most accessible FORMULA 1 video game from Codemasters to date. A new driver evaluation system quickly identifies player ability and tunes game settings to an appropriate level, whilst re-graded difficulty settings enable players to compete at incrementally higher levels as they become more experienced. Experienced gamers, who enjoy a more serious simulation of the demands placed upon FORMULA ONE™ drivers, can customise their settings to provide a true challenge.

In 2015, Codemasters will introduce a new FORMULA 1 title for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. The title will launch earlier in the FORMULA ONE season and players will receive digital updates for the game as the 2015 FIA FORMULA ONE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP™ unfolds, enabling players to compete against the drivers and teams they watch week in and week out.

“This is the year it all changes – for the sport and for the game,” explained Stephen Hood, Creative Director for the F1 series at Codemasters.

“There’s been a dramatic shift in the sport; the largest shake up in the rules and regulations for a very long time and the new power units provide a very different kind of challenge, for both driver and team. By delivering all of these changes, F1 2014 will make for an exciting and refreshingly different experience. Additionally, with the new driver evaluation system analysing each player’s skill level and suggesting appropriate game settings, plus re-graded difficulty levels including a brand new Very Easy setting, we aim to deliver a thoroughly rewarding F1 experience for players of all abilities, from the novice to the seasoned pro.”

By the sound of this announcement it will be a DLC update for (hopefully) a fraction of the cost.
I doubt that. I bet F1 2014 and F1 2015 will both be separate, full-priced games on the PC.

The latest F1 games were pretty good actually. If you want to challenge yourself shut off all the assists.
The dirt and Grid series were all fluff though, but Autosport is good. It is fun.

Dirt 2 was a blast. Love that game. Dirt 3, not so much.

I might buy 2014 if it's super cheap, otherwise I'm done with Codemasters. After buying the full priced GRiD 2 game only to find that 90% of the cars in multiplayer were DLC for sale, I was really pissed. It's one thing to sell DLC on Steam or wherever. It's another entirely to sell the full game then make the DLC look like playable cars only to pull the rug out from under the player when they go to use them.

Nah, the Colin McRae series was really cool, and they've had other ones. Their F1 used to be pretty good, though I haven't played them in a while.

I remember CMR2 being tons of fun and I still should have it installed actually. (their last good game?)
All the other CMR games after that I thought have not been very good at all.

And yah, as Theglaze wrote then the scale value tuning needs to go.
You set either mm or nm or whatever actual measurable value but not 1-10 or 1-11 or some random scale thinking it's going to make your game sell more. It might be easier to understand at first, but when you're adjusting your front wing then you need to have some kind of a link to reality to advance somewhere and actually have some ties to the real world.

I'm pretty sure the speed on my car for example is also from 1 to 11 - what's 9 in kph?

I assume we're talking about 6 months between them, which is still a decent period of time. Also, this is the first chance for fans of the sport to play with the new regulations, like turbo. I think we'll see a discount for people who buy both.

I have to disagree, I remember playing an old Collin McRae Rally that barely had any "flash" and focused entirely on the racing and the car.

That said I can't stomach their newer stuff, it's all pomp and circumstance, catch phrases and slang. I actually felt embarrassed trying to play their last rally game I tried not to mention incredibly annoyed.

When I fire up a racing game it's because I want to race a car, be it arcade or sim like. I don't care about or want some stupid style crap or story drama. Considering that and the state of racing games lately I haven't enjoyed one in years. Need for Speed turned into a drama queen show and Codemasters rally games turned into something for loud mouthed, insecure, ego driven mico-phalluses.

I do have some hope in Project Cars though.

I don't want to hear "accessible"...the lack of complexity over 5 years of releases is the very thing holding this series back and wasting the F1 license

It's been half a decade, and all of the chassis and suspension adjustments still remain void of any mechanical lingo and still use a mysterious 1 to 11 scale while timing sheets are absent from all the modes you'd expect that detail to be there (ie time trial/attack)...which means to me the magic behind the curtain is underwhelming at best.

But hey, F1 2014 will have a "Very Easy" mode and still supports last-gen consoles...last-gen physics and features.

Count me out.

I hope they bring back a bit more depth to this one and less arcade handholding.

The last one I stopped playing midway through the awfully long "tutorial" sequence.
Customisation was also greatly simplified.
I still hold F1 2001 at the peak of the F1 games since to get good at it I actually had to read one of Ayrton Senna's books where he explains in detail about setting up the cars.

Now it seems to be more about the "flash" and less about substance.

I am looking at getting a PS4 for some other games and I might grab this game for it.
I wonder if my G27 steering wheel will work.

Although with the price tag of $69.99 + tax on "next gen" console games here in Canada it makes me think really hard about buying a console at all.
