APB Reloaded Bans, Shames Cheaters

A post on the APB Reloaded website has word that the MMO crime game has implemented the Fair Fight anti-cheat system along with a new Open Conflict matchmaking system. The good news is that it turns out they have fewer cheaters than expected, but the unsurprising bad news is that there weren't none, and they are taking the step of publicly listing a sampling of 212 people they detected cheating. They say it turns out 98.8% of their daily players were not cheating at all, and they offer some other statistics they learned out the players who were cheating before they were banned:
For some even more startling facts; 60% of the players banned in this sample were paid players. That’s surprising on several levels. For comparison, about 10% of the monthly unique players in APB make a new purchase in the game in any given month. On a cumulative basis about 30% of all players playing the game have paid money for something at some point during their account history. So in simple terms, paid players turned out to be 2X over-represented in the initial ban sample, compared to the APB population as a whole.

Another startling fact; paid players who were banned had on average 260 hours of play time in the game, had played for over 1 year, and had on average spent $180 on virtual goods.

Now clearly they got their monies worth already (in comparison they could have chosen to pay $59.99 for 20-40 hours of play time in a traditional single-player game, or pay for 12 months of MMO subscription time for about that amount of money) and it's crazy that they chose to have themselves eliminated from the "sport of APB" by cheating.

The game improved over the beta?

Yes.

They have added various features since the original beta, including a new team death-match mode know as Flight Club.

The game is also a lot more stable than it was in beta.
Cool and thanks. I will have to check it out again one day!

Wow this is still going? I thought APB died years ago.

It did, but it came back from the dead about a year later rebranded as APB Reloaded.

I love APB and have been playing since the first beta test in 2010. It is good to see they have added better cheat detection software.

According to their blog post, it's something like the 19th most played game on Steam.

I confess having been an off-and-on APB addict since RTW Beta. The level of customization is amazing, the gameplay has epic highs and lows. It is flawed, but below the surface is a lot deeper than it looks - the skill curve can really have a huge impact...

...of course, without an anti-cheat system, that just made the problem worse.

It's not cheater-free, now, but it is leaps and bounds beyond where it was. I've actually gone back to playing fairly regularly.

But then, my love of broken toys is well documented.

A curious fact, most of them are probably German. Don't ask me why, but every obscure game has its chunk of relatively big german community.

I remember picking Hellgate from the bargain bin when it was already forgotten, and there were LOTS of germans playing it (in fact the chat was 90% german).

Do you have a single fact to back that up?

Well, they let this go for a year, and now doing someting abot it. Lame-o. Take their money, then ban em. They will be back. The problem is yo pissed off a lot of potential customers with your lack of movement on the cheaters in the first place. I played for an hour when the game came back, was steamrolled by cheaters big time, never went back. oh well.

I have no idea why they would find this surprising. Anyone who is rabid enough about a game to cheat at it is also going to be invested enough to buy into whatever advantages they can get.

I would only be surprised if that was not the case.

Only 1.2% of cheating players were able to be CAUGHT, but still that number seems surprisingly low. Fair Fight is hardly a perfect anti-cheat program, anybody with some time in BF4 knows that.

Still, better 212 than 0.

Disclaimer: I have never played APB or APB Reloaded, all comments out of left field.

Hell the fucking hacks/cheats for this were out of control back when it was just APB, and they are just now addressing it?

Gamersfirst isn't really known for addressing hacking in their games to well. Still, they've been trying their hardest for a couple years now banning and updating the client (and security junk with it) to try to catch hackers. Hasn't been a bang up job, but it's not out of control (usually).
