Firefall This Month

Red 5 Studios announces a July 29th launch date for Firefall, their upcoming open-world MMO shooter that's been in open beta testing for exactly one year. The company has reorganized and changed CEOs during that span, but now they say things are on track for an official release:
Firefall features campaign missions and exciting quests as well as dynamic events that appear throughout the world, offering players new experiences throughout as they embark on their adventure. As players explore the vast open-world from New Eden to Devil’s Tusk, they will encounter unique dynamic events, such as melding-fueled tornadoes, crystite meteor showers and Chosen incursions, which will bring new and exciting challenges to their Firefall experience. In addition to all of the PVE content, Firefall also features a large open-world PVP continent, where players can test their shooting skills and tactical abilities against other players to control outposts and resources in this hostile environment.

Firefall will be available completely free-to-play, with opportunities for cosmetic and convenience upgrades. Special Firefall Launch Packs are also available for purchase, which will include items ranging from the exclusive multiplayer vehicle to a digital soundtrack and a concept art-book. For more information about the digital content packs and early access, visit www.firefall.com.

“The update we are releasing for launch will be the largest update we have ever had,” said Macauley. “It will quadruple the amount of world space in Firefall and add roughly 15-times the amount of content we have had previously in Beta.”

With the release of Firefall, the company has also announced a new website, with full game details, community updates, and more at www.firefall.com.

You couldn't pay me to download and install this crap game again.

So you're saying I should put this crisp $5 bill back in my pocket?

Gamefront did a massive 3-part article on the troubles of Firefall and its rather egotistical head M. Kern. I think Blue posted it here a few months ago. It's a poster child for how NOT to do game development.

Part 2
Part 3

What? Didn't this close down at least twice? And last I heard they removed the PvP part of the game, which is literally the only "content" the game had. How did they sprout MMO-amount of PvE content in the last 6 months?

They've had the open world for at least two years, and pretty steadily added new stuff to do, in between overhauling core systems every 4-6 months... However I'm most excited about this reversing direction on the previous decision to make further PVE areas instanced, rather than added on to the freely-explorable map (which is what "quadrupled playable area" sounds like to me). They have been working on a boatload of additional PVE content for the past several years, but when the schizophrenic CEO tells you to scrap it and go work on whatever cool, new feature he just thought of... Actual implemented gameplay stagnated for a while there. This "final release" represents the faith and goodwill of new ownership/leadership, giving what remains of the team a chance to just churn out and polish whatever content they had ideas for and/or already worked on to some degree, which is why there's going to be an avalanche of new stuff. In addition to reworking/reverting a lot of the more unpopular changes with progression and other gameplay mechanics.

So I agree with what's already been said -- it's either going to be super amazing or a giant clusterfuck -- but it's their last hurrah, so they really have no choice but to be bold. Obviously, having contributed nearly $200 to the game already, I hope it works out... But I've had enough fun with it along the way that it would just be more disappointing to see it not live up to its potential than anything else, if it finally fizzles out.

OH, and finally... They're on Steam. So pretty much confirms it was that stubborn dickwad keeping them off of there thus far... Such a shame.

The game has been through so many changes already that my old experience in beta is basically irrelevant. At least they seem to be ditching the over emphasis on e-sports. Thankfully its F2P so I will give this a shot at launch and see how the changes shape up.

Looks like they are betting all their chips with this move.

They have a TON of major changes they are making to the game, and it looks like they are going live with these changes with no openbeta testing. The game right now, is very MEH. The changes look really good, and sound really good, but no one knows if they really are good or not. So the game goes live, and everyone is in for something new. If its bad, that will pretty much be the last you hear of this game.

The problem is I have several level 85 (or whatever the previous max was) level chars but since I mostly skipped MoP I'd need to grind out those 5 levels and I don't want to do that. Oh well.

You can raise them to 90 and skip it if you buy Draenor, it comes with a free character level boost so that people in your situation can come back and play with friends if they wanted to.

Firefall had promise - it could have been a Tribes FPS meets Borderlands ARPG that would have pulled in the masses and made zillions. But it's not.

Thread hijack, the Warlords of Draenor beta pretty much tells the Pandaria-style atmosphere to fuck off as soon as you get ported to the Dark Portal. It's definitely the darkest timeline and it remains that way through much of what's playable.

The Garrison sounded really neat, but I admit I've not followed it closely.

I always get this twitch leading up to every new expansion. "I'll be different! I won't have to farm", etc, etc...

Like all the others, I'm sure I'll try it out, but I don't suspect I'll last long...it is neat that you can tell the differences in expansions based on which teams worked on them.

They certainly remained true to how it would be a 'savage' world but it's much more than that. The introduction scenario really gives old heroes like Khadgar some amazing love but once you leave and hit Frostfire, it's bonerville for those who are familiar with the lore and how we are able to fight with folks such as Durotan, Draka and younger Drek'Thar. Not to mention the other Orc warlords and their new model goodness.

The Garrison is integrated rather seamlessly from what I have experienced but much is locked out till later testing.

Another MMO? F2P with "convenience" upgrades? New CEO and staff shuffle?

Oh, this one is going places..
