Escape Dead Island Announced

Deep Silver announces Escape Dead Island, a new survival/mystery game using the zombie-filled setting of the Dead Island series coming to Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 this fall to depict the events that occur between Dead Island and the upcoming Dead Island 2. They also say those who preorder the game from GameStop will get beta access to Dead Island 2, but they do not seem to offer the PC edition. There's a "paradise meets insanity" trailer to show off the game's art style, and here's word on that and more:
In this single-player experience, fans will take on the role of ambitious Cliff Calo, son of a wealthy media empire mogul with a chip on his shoulder and something to prove, as he traverses across the globe to Banoi after hearing about the gruesome events that took place in the original global best-seller, Dead Island. Can Cliff uncover the clandestine origins of the virus and get out before it’s too late?

With an exceptionally striking comic-vignette art style, Escape Dead Island emphasizes a story driven plot which pits players against their own psyche as they try to escape the island and the cryptic, looping horrors that lurk there. Penned by Emmy® award-winning author Anne Toole, Escape Dead Island catapults Dead Island fans onto a lush tropical island infested with brutal zombies where only cunning stealth can help players retain their sanity.

I didn't play the first one... but... was the point of that game not to escape the island?

Also, can you escape a place you went on purpose?

Yeah, it wasn't a great game but I enjoyed DI too. I have Riptide as well but haven't had a chance to play it yet.
I'm a huge fan of DI and DI:R, having unlocked every achievement for both on PC. We need more DI and DI:R love because they don't get the credit they deserve.

The ease of Coop is brilliant in both, letting any level player play with any other and the enemies scale to each player dynamically (all games need this!). And Coop fast travel when another player reaches a quest location, brilliant as well!

The crafting is amazing, the zombie dismemberment is second to none, the loot system rewards exploration, and so on.

There's just nothing quite like DI and DI:R. That is why they sold millions. ...as for Deep Silver milking the IP to death...blah.

As for this game and DI2, I'll just wait to see what people say about them before I consider buying.

I had alot of fun with the co-op in dead island with 3 of my friends. Never played any of the DLC or anything, but there were parts in the game that were very memorable playing with friends, a couple of which were very fun engine glitches and exploits that were stumbled upon that provided a certain degree of emergent gameplay in the limited "open-world" areas.

Sure it's not everyone's cup of tea, but at least it was a decent departure from regular zombie schlock. Modding mouse movement to swing the weapons with arm control instead of standard mouse1 swings was fun too, and set it apart as well.

Crap story, true.. but who in their right mind plays zombie games for the story?

Does Techland not own the rights to this series anymore? Because all these recent Dead Island games are being made be other developers; this one in particular is being made by FatShark.

Pretty sure Deep Silver owns the IP. Not that it matters, the first game sucked, I'm sure the second game sucked, the MOBA is a waste of space, and this will be shit too.

Why they think they have a franchise in Dead Island i don't understand.

Because Dead Island sold well enough to warrant milking? Publishers don't milk something unless it makes them money. For what it's worth, the original DI wasn't bad at all. A little bit janky and largely misrepresented by the initial teaser video but the combat and exploration were great fun. The last third of the game should have been cut but the first two thirds were good.

As for this new entry in the series, it's too early to judge. The stealth and psychological horror aspects could be interesting. I don't really like the art style but that's something I can easily overlook if the gameplay is up to snuff.

I don't mind zombie games particularly, but this one just looks terrible. At least they're trying something different though.

I feel the same way when I see new COD games.

Yep to both...COD in particular, I don't see how it continues to stay afloat, yet every fall, recordbreaking sales numbers get announced.

Oh well, different strokes...

The horror?
Scorpio Slasher: ... What about you boy, what do hate?
Marcus: ... Bullies. Tiny d*ck egotists who hurt people for no reason, make people lock their doors at night. People who make general existence worse, people like you.

Why are they even bothering with Dead Island... They should have just rebooted it after DI 1 and Riptide, with Dying Light. Now they have Dying Light, Dead Island 2, Dead Island: Epidemic, and now Escape Dead Island. What the hell.

Dying Light looks awesome. I was hoping they'd just go with that, but now there's 3 Dead Island games on top of that, when Dying Light looks almost exactly like Dead Island already.
Let me explain this confusing mess. Originally Techland made Dead Island for Deep Silver the publisher. Deep Silver owns "Dead Island" name and franchise. Dead Island went on to sell a TON of copies and has legions of fans despite low review scores.

Deep Silver, being a somewhat shady/DLC hungry/milking publisher, wants to milk the Dead Island name for all its worth. Hence, you got a rushed, inferior follow-up with DI: Riptide (still a great game if you enjoy DI). Now you are getting Dead Island Epidemic MOBA (garbage), Dead Island 2 being made by Yager (of Spec Ops fame), and this new nonsensical survival "Dead Island".

Since Techland can't use the Dead Island name, they have developed the true spiritual successor of Dead Island: Dying Light. Dying Light is being made by Techland for Warner Brothers the publisher.

As such, the true creative spirit and innovation of Dead Island is being implemented into Dying Light. Dead Island 2 has nothing to do with the original developers, and is simply a cash-in by Deep Silver. Can Yager make a great game with Dead Island 2? Hard to say. Spec Ops was memorable but pretty generic gameplay-wise.

TLDR: Blame Deep Silver for everything, and support Techland because they've put out and are working on some really innovative and good products (CoJ: Gunslinger, Hellraid self-published).

A story driven Dead Island? The story in the first game was bad enough as it is.
