Xenonauts Released

Here's a Steam Community announcement with word that Xenonauts is now available on Steam after over five years of development and an Early Access period for Goldhawk Interactive's X-COM-inspired strategy game (thanks DocZ). Word is they are turning their attention to adding Steam Workshop support as well as completing the OS X and Linux ports, which should be ready soon. Here's the rundown on the game:
Xenonauts is a strategy game in which you control a multi-national military organisation defending a Cold War-era Earth from alien invasion, using small squads of persistent soldiers to eliminate the extraterrestrials and recover their technology in turn-based ground combat. A detailed strategic layer allows you to co-ordinate the defence of the planet, using your interceptors to shoot down UFOs and researching captured artefacts to learn about your foes and unlock new combat equipment to use on your missions.

Xenonauts is a spiritual successor to the classic X-Com strategy games from the 1990s. We aim to improve the graphics, add new content and streamline the interface whilst still retaining all of the key mechanics of the original games. Devoted fans should love this game, but we're also keen to introduce the joys of old-school grand strategy to a whole new generation of players who might not otherwise experience it!

So, this or the Open-Xcom from a few days ago?

I loaded up XCom and Open XCom. Plays great!

Damn, I'd forgotten how hard XCom is. My squads keep getting wiped out, and I'm only playing Normal difficulty. Sectoids open the door to the saucer and fire six shots, killing four of my guys at a 10 space range. WTF? Or aliens in the black part of the map picking off my guys. Grr.

Are they near the gas station yet?
<end turn>

Are they near the gas station yet? Rocket Launcher guy! Do your thing!

I was really pumped about this game, but the fact that the battles are not randomly generated just killed the whole thing for me. If I'm mistaken on that detail, please correct me.
The maps are semi-random: each level is broken up into large sections and there are several particular layouts (6 or so per map type?) that are placed when the tactical battle starts. The tiles are recycled often enough to be noticeable after your first couple of matches.

Unlike some games (lookin' at you EA games) this is fully moddable, so in six months, expect a lot more variation.

I picked up Xenonauts. It is awesome, and extremely similar to the original XCom.

-You can build more than ONE base and place them anywhere on the globe (i pick all X-Files bases or ufo hotspots in the real world, Tunisia, Area-51, Tehran, and Belgium)
-Very easy to use interface
-Smooth/non-instrusive tactical interface in ground battle
-Actual strategy involved when intercepting a UFO with jet-fighters
-Hard as bawls (prepare to lose your guys and gals if you ain't careful)
-You can build a Mig-32 Foxtrot!
-Awesome music
-One of my comrades fell in battle, so I made another haul him on his back to my CH-48 Chinook. No xenonaut will be left behind!

Nice, watched the whole thing. I was skeptical about this, but you've turned me around. Graphics in motion look a lot better than the previous screenshots I'd seen, and the UI seems easy to use while providing the all the options you'd expect.

Ha, I was just going to link you your review James- love your channel. I was really pumped about this game, but the fact that the battles are not randomly generated just killed the whole thing for me. If I'm mistaken on that detail, please correct me. That was the main draw of the original game for me. It's unfortunate because it looks like they really nailed some of the other parts of the game.

I think I'm going to hit up openxcom to get my fix first, http://openxcom.org/2014/06/openxcom-1-0/

I wonder if this was planned all along as the date to be released or if its in response to the Open-Xcom release. I'm personally interested in both. Can anyone who has xenoauts say some words about how much of a finished state it is in?

How does it compare to UFO: Aftermath, which is on the GoG flash sales right now? Or do we not talk about that?

Edit: Also Open XCom is definitely going on the laptop.

THE FIRST RULE OF XCOM IS THAT YOU DO NOT TALK ABOUT AFTERMATH!
