Eclipse Games announces the release of Super Toy Cars
on Steam for Windows and
OS X, saying the scaled-down racing game is 25% off for its first week out of
Early Access. They provide the following outline of improvements since Early
Access began in February:
- Improved gameplay: Drifting system has been tuned and improved, and gamepad controls have been redefined, as well as rumble functionality added for Xbox controllers.
- Improved graphics: New weather effects, new paintjobs for all the vehicles, improved illumination, night tracks,...
- Level Editor: The Track Editor has been improved and extended, so that now you're given more options and it's easier to create and share tracks with other players.
- New Achievements: There are now 30 achievements to unlock, many of them suggested by the community.
- Mac version: The game now supports Windows and Mac.
I bought this, my kids love VW camper vans and at the early access price it didn't seem too bad a gamble. I don't think it's the most cutting edge game ever, nor ground breaking, but racing around with your chums is fun.
However, they've been an example of how this early access thing should work: they're on the Steam forums all the time, speaking to the users, making changes based on it, plus they made it to v1 and a Mac port. If we were to take this as an example of a possible future of game development, it might not be such a bad thing.
But it's one example amongst many, and even though my personal experience was OK to good, I'm not sure it's warmed me to the whole early access model just yet.
