Ships Ahoy - Watch Dogs; First Reviews

Today marks the release of Watch Dogs, as Ubisoft now offers the open-world hacking action game also written as Watch_Dogs. The Watch Dogs website has links to locate the dizzying array of different versions of the game, some of which are listed as preorders, and therefore may no longer be available. NVIDIA released drivers and a tweak guide for the game yesterday, and AnandTech says AMD will follow suit today, but a new Catalyst beta is not yet available. The first reviews are online, and here are some of those, with the PC review listed where available: Ars Technica, CVG, Forbes, GameSpot, Hardware Heaven, IncGamers.com, PC Gamer, PC Games (Germany), Polygon, Rock, Paper, Shotgun, Strategy Informer, The Verge, and Worthplaying. Also, this ctOS Mobile App FAQ has details on the accompanying Watch Dogs iOS and Android apps, with links to get them that should go live when they are available. Here's the official description of the game:
Set in Chicago, where a central network of computers connects everyone and everything, Watch_Dogs explores the impact of technology within our society. Using the city as your weapon, you will embark on a personal mission to inflict your own brand of justice.

Chicago's overarching network is known as the Central Operating System (ctOS), and it controls almost all of the city's technology and information - including key data on all of the city's residents.

You play as Aiden Pearce, a brilliant hacker and former thug, whose criminal past led to a violent family tragedy. While seeking justice for those events, you'll monitor and hack those around you by manipulating the ctOS from the palm of your hand. You'll access omnipresent security cameras, download personal information to locate a target, control traffic lights and public transportation to stop the enemy... and more.

Yeah, some guy called me in while I was hacking a CTos tower. Didn't think much of it, it's happened before. Set my waypoint to a collection item that the tower revealed. Pulled up, got out just in time for a sports car to rear-end me at 60mph and smash my car into a brick wall. Thought it was an accident (happens ALL the time, NPC drivers are accident prone in this game)until the driver got out and pulled out an AK. I was like, WTF? Then he started looking in the car for me, guess he missed me getting out right before he slammed into the car. I whipped out my revolver and put a burst into the back of his skull before he figured it out and got a win screen for online bounty.

One of the coolest things that I can remember happening in any game.

hmmmm....the online hacking stuff is kind of lame. The area is to small and the hacking is wayyyy to slow. I have not had a successful round yet, ie: compelte a hack. And when I am getting hacked, I find them instantly.

I have won 2x....but it is cheap....I just HAPPEN to join a game and hack someone who was near a construction site, and I hid in a corner on the middle level where he would never find me...EVER.....I dunno....kind of flawed...

Hardest part (thus far) has been the thug hidouts, where you have to use stealth and cunning to "knock down" 2 dudes in the midst of a bunch of other dudes.....can kill everyone except the 2 you have to interrogate. Is fun and damn hard!

I love those. The ones that frustrate the shit out of me are convoys. 20 guys shooting at you, and you can't shoot into the crowd for fear of killing civvies and accidentally killing the guy or guys you have to knock down. Then they call in backup who arrive behind your cover position. First one I did took me 2 hours to get right.

Otherwise, been playing for close to 20 hours so far. Still loving it, although I haven't even finished Act 1 yet. As far as story gripes, I think it's an OK story so far. Nothing better or worse than a big summer action movie.

Which, let's face it, AAA games tend to be. If you want awesome story telling, you're looking for the indie games thataway. Obviously there are exceptions.

5hrs of gameplay and I'm enjoying it quite a bit. Not seeing anything that annoys me or pisses me off either, it's fun. Haven't even gotten out of the 2nd act yet having fun screwing around just doing whatever I feel like. Though the lag/stutter bug needs to get fixed, on the 14.6's I'm getting a solid 40-50fps on a 7950 w/boost, on a amd-6300 on ultra settings. But the sucker does eat memory, sitting at 5.2GB/8GB in use.

I'm tempted, it seems if I use a gamepad that a many of the biggest gripes don't apply. That said, I'm a little cashed on the GTA clones (but can still appreciate a good one). Overall, though, performance is my primary concern. I've got a 580GTX which is still serving me very well in pretty much everything that matters so that I don't feel any urge to upgrade, but the rumors of it being a GPU-devouring game (and not commensurately pretty to boot), put me off. A rolling benchmark demo would be nice. I will admit, it's times like this when seeking out a bootleg copy doesn't seem a bad idea-- I'll take a risk that a game just isn't good, but when it comes to a game being effectively unplayable, that's a different story. Not that I will, of course. Eventually someone I trust with similar specs who knows how to keep a tight ship and get the most out of what they got will provide the low down (that Nvidia article was nice, but I still don't entirely trust it).

On a semi-unrelated note, Rock Paper Shotgun tends to be one of my goto sources for reviews, so what they have to say is interesting in light of some of the higher reviews from the traditionally less trustworthy sources.

sad about the story,

the anti-coop multiplayer thing would be interesting with some of my friends though, so we can mess each other's games up with the 'hacking' into their SP experience

Ok, so I downloaded this from TPB(yea sue me, already got burned by AC4 horrible PC port, and Uplay can suck a fat one) and lo and behold, the stuttering in this game makes it nearly unplayable. It seems it's the same type of v-sync issues from AC4 is here.

So yea, save your money.

Hope you got the skidrow version that had the bonus DLC.

ahahahahahahah this made me LOL. It's not just a new scene release.. it's the currency of the future!

The biggest complaint I'm seeing from "real" people is the crappy driving physics. I was worried that the driving would suck from the pre-release videos I saw. I got Saints Row 3 from the Humble Bundle, and while I mostly enjoyed it, I couldn't stand its crappy driving physics (and never ending gear shifting). I watched a few videos on YouTube and the driving does look bad, and practically no damage modeling sucks. One thing I liked doing in GTA IV was using a realistic driving mod, which tweaked the handling and performance of the cars to more closely match their real world inspirations. It also increased the damage to more realistic levels, but it was still too forgiving. I used a vehicle editor and bumped up the damage multiplier so one hard hit would fuck it up good. It made car chases much more intense.

I'm going to wait longer and see if it gets fixed, and probably $25 or less. Hell I'm thinking I may just stop buying games for a year to catch up on my backlog. I doubt they'll change the driving physics in a patch, but maybe it can be modded.

I don't know if this video is from PC or console (http://youtu.be/Oj1UVuNG_Yg) and if it's PC, what the graphics settings are, but the vehicle pop in is horrible. I thought GTA: SA's pop ins were bad.
