Op Ed

Ars Technica - It’s time for Nintendo to move beyond white characters. Japanese company too Caucasian-centric?
By the time fan-service fighting series Super Smash Bros. expanded to a 34-character roster, it too reflected Nintendo’s narrow palette: 20 “human” characters populate Super Smash Bros. Brawl’s roster, and they’re all white. In fact, that game operates as a sort of Nintendo museum, thanks to its giant “trophy” selection, and its diversity offerings are just as scant.

I don't read Ars enough to know this, maybe that's the case. I guess they should travel more. In general though, most media platforms are shoddy and lazy. Any news from MSNBC, Fox News, CNN, Washington Post, New York Times, and TIMES I avoid always, since its just trash or just a mouthpiece for the Pentagon.

I won't comment on this issue further with Nintendo other than it strikes me as odd that there are hardly any Native American (brown people) hero games (my ancestors) from American video game companies.

Japan is a country in which 96% of its population is native, so they really don't see differently colored people all that often. Nintendo making its character all monotone is pretty much in keeping with how Japan IS.

I'd say that if someone wants to be mad at Japan over something, maybe get mad over their glorification of rape and underage sex. (as in, older businessmen screwing teen girls.)

Just ask yourselves if something is an improvement.

If I do not/can not identify with a character that has a different gender, race, religion or sexual orientation than mine, then that is clearly not an improvement for me as the person playing the game.

However, if it helps someone else identify with the character they are playing, and allows them the enjoy the game more thoroughly, I will happily shout "That's an improvement!"

My issue is when "diversity" becomes a checkbox on a spec sheet and the resulting characters are cardboard cutouts or are so laughably done to highlight that "diversity" that they become caricatures. At that point, I think it becomes a disservice to inclusivity and diversity.

In entertainment, as a whole, we really don't handle that very well if at all. We, as a society, have this myopic view that doesn't allow people to just be people. We feel driven to label and exclude, even when we do it to ourselves as human beings. We want to point ourselves out as "special" for either X criteria or Y reason.

Beamer, I think I speak for most of us when I say that you really need to screw off. Nobody cares. The Japanese make mostly Japanese characters because, SURPRISE, they're in a culture which is almost entirely Japanese. If you have a problem with that, why not fly over there and picket outside Nintendo's home office? Surely that would make them aware that there are other cultures better than arguing with the rest of us.

How about you don't put speak for the rest of us, if someone wants to say something they are obviously welcome to do so, but don't presume you speak for the people here.

No, that's actually a pretty safe bet in most cases. Beamer lives in own little fantasy world.

Most of Ars' writers are based out of Chicago or San Francisco. They don't know any better because they aren't exposed to it in the world around them other than the people who are so unhinged that they get bent out of shape over articles like these. As a result, it solidifies in their minds the idea that they are the noble, enlightened, highly evolved members of society and those that disagree with them are lesser beings. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy, really.

I'm going to bow out, as no one really cares what I have to say, I'll just continue to point out how weird I find it that people get so defensive when an improvement is brought up that involves something not exactly what they are.

Just ask yourselves if something is an improvement. You don't need to be defensive. Just ask yourself if things can be improved. If yes, why do you get so angry when people suggest these improvements?

No where in the original two comments did we say Nintendo shouldn't make characters of more diverse skin pigmentation. We were pointing out that it was our own racial and culture background that makes us assume these characters are white.

I'm all for more diversity in games, so long as its done tastefully and not some shoe-horned stereo type. Does Nintendo have a diversity problem? I guess, but then they have more Koopas than actual humans. They've essentially been reusing the same characters/IPs since the 1980s. Their inability to create new ideas and characters seems a lot more endemic than their failure to create diversity amongst the cast.

Who said anything about a "small" african company, Beamer? Way to belittle their imaginary successes (and also completely miss the point), you racist. :p

How many games exist where the protagonist is black, and not a massmurdering psycho or a walking stereotype? *crickets*

Declaring Nintendo as the "Grand Wizard" of video game development, when they literally haven't invented a new franchise or character in like 30 years is what people don't actually like about this article.

IMO, the companies that include the "Token" character are doing a larger disservice to promoting diversity.

Apparently a lot of people care enough to get angry that someone is bringing the subject up. In fact, any time race is brought up here in an article, there are a lot of angry white men making angry posts.

I personally think this criticism is silly and trivial, and explained earlier why Japanese companies are like this and why it won't change. But we should ask ourselves why angry white men come out of the wood work any time someone mentions race or encourages diversity.

In general, here at Blue's News any time anything regarding diversity is posted, whether it be race, gender, or sexual preference, a lot of straight white males get very angry and talk about how consideration for these things just isn't necessary and how people should just shut up about it.

Gay gamer con? Fuck you, go to the regular cons. This is a waste of time and money.

Women portrayed as perpetual victims in games? Fuck you, that problem doesn't exist, and if it does, it isn't actually a problem. Games are designed for men, if you're a woman, go play The Sims. Here's a list of three female characters that are exceptions that disprove you.

Racial stereotypes in gaming? Shut up, stop mentioning race, you racist!

Why is that? Even if specific criticisms are a bit silly, why the anger?

they are probably angry because they arent as morally superior as you are

good job on that btw - you really deserve a medal for your service to humanity

You guys sure love status quo.

I'd argue that the status quo is better than characters created arbitrarily just to diversify their game portfolio. The best written black character I can think of in a japanese game is Zzaz from FF13, and he's practically a walking stereotype.
