Tropico 5 Preorders Soar

Kalypso Media announces that pre-release sales of Tropico 5 have set company records, saying the island dictator sequel has topped Amazon pre-sales charts in many territories for some time now and revealing it has racked up four times as many preorders than 2011's Tropico 4 did. "We have put great passion and almost all available resources into the development and marketing of Tropico 5 and the pre-sales success once again demonstrates the talent and ability of our great teams in Germany, the UK and the USA," says Simon Hellwig, Global Managing Director of Kalypso Media. "We are constantly working to expand our franchises internationally and these figures for Tropico 5 are testament to this." The PC edition of Tropico 5 is due globally on Friday via digital distribution, a retail edition is due in the U.S. on June 3rd (a week later than previously planned), OS X and Xbox 360 versions are due in the summer, the PS4 edition will follow in the fall, and a SteamOS version is also planned.

My video review is going up Friday (release day). It will be quite positive.

Can you give us any advance details on the co-op play? This is what I've been waiting to hear about for the game.

I haven't been able to try it out because there's nobody else online before the game comes out, but I do know the details based on the menus and such. You can set your game (when it is created) to either be competitive or cooperative. In the competitive mode, the first town on the island (which can be large enough to support up to 4 players comfortably) to complete a number of random missions, have a specific amount of cash, or research a high-level tech wins.
I'm not totally sure about how the cooperative mode works, since I can't start a cooperative game by myself: it could be that resources are shared, or just that you aren't competing against the other players and simply trying to reach a common goal. I suspect the it's latter option (like you are all trying to complete the same missions).

As for the earlier comments about the difficulty of the game: yes, it is quite easy to make a lot of money through exports. However, I have lost every game I have started either because of elections or military invasions.

Thank you for the answers.

Hey Krovven
It is off topic but meant to ask you, are you part of ShackTak?
I was watching one of the latest videos from them and saw a guy called Kroven in the squad. I know it spelled differently but thought it was you

Tropico 4 gave me severe buyers remorse. I played the shit for an hour before I got bored. It is incredibly easy. I would have to try to lose to fail.

It looks like the perennial difficulty issues haven't been fixed. This guy played the preview build at max everything for an hour and he's coasting along:

I really don't see why they bother having sliders if they're going to make a game you can't lose.

Wait, coop, as in same map coop Transport Tycoon style?

I've been wondering about the co-op too but none of the coverage I've seen so far has really talked about it.

The initial previews sound promising.
GMG has a 20% off code - FUSWJT-B1DU64-JBV8UY that makes the game $28.88

So tempted, but I already don't have any time to play anything... Sigh
I am in the same boat.
I am pretty sure you'll be able to buy it at that price later on as well.
Normally games that can be had for cheap before they come out will be the same price after release as well. Maybe even cheaper. GMG has 25%-30% off codes sometimes.

Yeah pre-ordered here, I have all the past Tropicos and they are fun. mostly the first time this is multi-player is probably a big draw, I have 4 friends who have never bought Tropico who will all be joining me due to this co-op and multiplayer functionality on this new version!
can't wait to play

So were the previews for Simcity. Please dont preorder this game. Think.

If it's even half of what Tropico 3 was it's going to be a buy for me Kinda starved for a good sim, even if it's a easy one. Maybe there is some challenge to be found here.
