The Elder Scrolls Online Road Ahead

The Elder Scrolls Online website has a roadmap for the future of Bethesda's MMORPG on the one-month anniversary of the game going live, offering details on the imminent first update for the game, plans for subsequent patches, and a response to the reviews that skewed negative amid the mixed response it met with. On that last topic, producer Matt Firor says: "While I obviously don’t agree with the more negative articles, the reviews are out there, and we read them to determine if there are legitimate complaints that we should address." There's also word that players who suffered through the game's launch issues will be compensated with an additional five days of playing time. Here's the general plan going forward:
Along with fixing bugs, combatting black market gold farmers, and balance tweaks, we have a long list of features and updates we’re working on that will be coming throughout 2014 and beyond. Here’s a sneak peek at what’s coming up. For most of these, we don’t know yet which update they’ll be in, but they’re under active development right now:

  • A system that allows grouped players to see each other even when they’re in different phases
  • A justice system—steal from and kill NPCs and deal with the consequences if you are caught
  • Migration of European Megaserver to our European datacenter.
  • Field of View (FOV) adjustment
  • Armor dyeing and tinting
  • Two new Veteran Dungeons: Crypt of Hearts and City of Ash
  • New region of Craglorn with a new Trial (the Serpent)
  • Increased ability to pick up items in the world
  • Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood storyline and quests.
  • Spellcrafting
  • Horse Racing
  • Dragonstar Arena—similar to Trials, but built for a group of four
  • Improvements to fishing
  • Crafting system improvements
  • Improved Looking for Group system
  • Better NPC facial animations
  • Guild functionality updates: guild store interface updates, customizable guild insignias, tabards, and guild ranks, and Guild Kiosks—guild stores open to everyone that are available to the highest-bidding guild.
  • Auto-leveling dungeons that level to your group leader
  • Awards when you repeat dungeons
  • Imperial City PvP dungeon

Is a crowd of 50 people waiting for a boss to respawn again and again and again part of that immersion?

Is that all you got? Haven't seen any bots since one of the last purges a few days ago. However, those so called "solo-dungeons" are the weakest part of the game imo. There is, indeed, little immersion in running through a ruin with 20 other players paving the way ahead of you so you have a clean walk to the dungeon boss for the dungeon achievement. Then again, those few dumb open dungeons are few and far in between. ESO's charm is in the outdoor world, the group-instanced dungeons and, of course, the solo-instanced dungeons.

Did a quest today where an intire island was made especially for that solo quest. Felt like I was playing a single player game, meanwhile trading an epic rune with another player in the chat. Freaking ace xD

??? Like every freaking mmo dude,

I agree with both, you should wait a solid 6 months if you want a nice smooth experience with a MMO. This one with invisi party members though takes the cake in needing to wait on my end.

To me the only big win jumping in early is getting to exploit the game in small or large manners which will be patched and balanced out. So if you want to be a wheel in a MMO it is best to start asap. Since I have ADHD, I don't stick nor pretend I'll ever be one of those players. There has yet to be THEE GAME made.

Since I kill the boss once and move on... it's annoying to see but not a deal breaker, for me.

That said... Last night I killed a boss twice and got no loot other than 1 gold on the second kill... so obviously the folks at ZOS are doing things to combat the botting and boss camping.

"but if it doesn't coincide with mine, I will bitch about it like a sixth grader."

I don't fault them for not liking the game. If you haven't actually played it, however, you're being nothing but an ignorant joke.

I'm not going to spend 60 dollars to somehow validate my ability to argue that the game looks boring as shit. I've watched plenty of videos that show the exact same thing: A bog standard MMO with an Elder Scrolls paint job, albeit with decent combat.

I'm also not going to spend 60 dollars just to find out that your taste in games is likely just fucking terrible. *snipped the sad rage fit*

You've just insulted everyone here who said they absolutely love the game. And why is that? Because my opinion doesn't coincide with yours. Noisy hypocrite.

Anyway, I hated the beta but I love the game. This game is for Elder Scrolls players -- gamers who respect a need for immersion, lore, and generally like to "take their time". This is the first MMO where exploration is truly rewarded, which adds a layer to it that, to me, feels like a revolutionary thing to MMO's. Almost every NPC has something interesting to say (about the environment, threads, political stuff, lore in general, etc.) and almost every quest has it's own interesting story to tell with it's own climax.

It's also a big no-no for powerlevelers. There's also no world PVP. While many would understandably disagree with me here, I like this decision because it's in and of itself immersion breaking. Imagine taking a breath staring out into the sunset or closely listening to the story between two NPC's, right before being flanked from the side by a lvl 50 asshole.

Like all ES games, this game is about immersion. Like all ES games, this game is about story. Like all ES games, this game is about exploration. Like all ES games, this game is about combat.

Unlike all ES games, this game is, however, an MMO. Don't forget that.

No surprise, those that are playing it love it, those who played beta are 50/50, and those that never played it hate it.

I have 100+ hours in it, only had 1 issue with a group or phase, the first couple days we entered the first dungeon as a group and 1 dude lost connection and it took a few minutes for him to synch up. No big deal.

I have 60+ hours on my main and just hit level 23 (halfway through the 2nd "area"). I explore and have a blast. I read everything, I enjoy the story, I take my time. You know, like how TES is supposed to be played. I am running into people who are 3rd level legendary or whatever and they are complaining about being bored. Yea, cause you didn't listen to one story/quest line and just clicked through. duh.

oh well. They are doing a very good job with the game. It is pretty darn close to Skyrim with friends.

Single player AAA games have more issues then they are having right now, and all people want to do is complain. The game has an uptime right now for NA servers of 99.9%!

I am sucked in, but then again I was for the other TES stuff too.....

Posted in the review thread but was late to the party...

Teso is the first MMO to really captivate me since WoW. I dont understand why people love to hate TESO ?

People love TES games. They feel that the freedom and beauty of single-player TES games is not done justice with this MMO. Most people are afraid that a succesful TES MMO will mean the end of single player TES as we know it.

I covered, and I mean scoured every inch of the starting isle for the DC faction first time I played it. I just found a buried treasure scavenger hunt quest hidden away (and no, not the gear one) on my second play through of it.

It's basically impossible to know if you've found every single quest that's hidden away in this game.

It's also kinda neat to go back to the boat and see the NPC's gathering there who you've helped while questing and hear what they have to say. They didn't just do quest giving voice acting, seems every NPC has something different to say post-quests, or mid-quests, etc. I remember not realizing a friend and I had picked up a quest that involved a follower when the NPC suddenly yelled out to me, with an almost too human like tone, "Hey, where are you going?! The entrance is THIS way!".

Point being, this is an outstanding MMO if you find yourself getting sucked into it. It's easily the most immersive one I've ever played. Not expecting everyone to love it (it's still MMO mechanics at work), but if you think this is some shoddy MMO that was just thrown together.... no.

FANBOY WAAAAH FANBOY WAAAAH FANBOY WAAAAAH FANBOY WAAAAAH

If you want to call your game to be called Elder Scrolls, you need to present Elder Scrolls. This game doesn't in so many areas, it's staggering. You still like it, fine. It's not Elder Scrolls. There is no Dark Brotherhood. There is no Thieves Guild. There is no freedom to do shit except "go to zone and kill mobs." Yes, it's an MMO, and it's an MMO with a thin veneer of Elder Scrolls lore, and that's about it.

*blurpyderp I'm smartass SNIP*

So wait, you're pretending you played the game right there? You're not fooling anyone, man. There's been enough ignorant comments from you that show you obviously haven't. One of those is the one you're most noisy about: that it doesn't feel like an ES game. Well, coming from someone who actually played the game (yes, Cutter, one that ergo does know what he's talking about), this game is very much an ES game. At some point I was in a Draugr tomb. I was right back in Skyrim, playing Skyrim. There's also tons and tons and tons... and tons of lorebooks scattered all over the place. Want to check behind an Orc's longhouse? By all means, do so! That form of exploration rewards you -- you'll likely find a locked chest or two.

I know people have different opinions. I don't fault them for not liking the game. If you haven't actually played it, however, you're being nothing but an ignorant joke.

I felt the combat model could be better than Skyrim. To me all ES's were weak in this dept. Having some alternate skills to choose is better. Hopefully the next SP ES will have a nice large Skill Bar.

(Wanted to add, yes there are many that still play and love MMO's, but there is also a large crowd of us chasing perhaps something we cannot regain.)

To last posters. A big part of this is "It's your first MMO", MMO's are like LSD, the more you do them, the less they give out always wanting more and not getting it. Eventually quitting.

For many MMO'ers we searching possibly for something we'll never get back. The first golden years of MMO'ing. Enjoy the ride. I'm certain your first MMO was a better MMO than my first.

I've been playing MMO's since M59 (before EQ and even UO), MUDS before that. I've played a ton of MMOs over the years.

I find ESO's questing and skill system highly entertaining. I actually like the combat better than the single player games (although they still need to work on response times... nothing more annoying than spamming a key that doesn't seem to go off, only to find it actually did, and it fucked up your stamina/magicka management for the encounter)

The questing is presented like a quest, much like the single player games... not a task of "kill 10x and come back... and that's it."
Most quests actually seem like you are doing something worthwhile... that is if you are the type of person that enjoys the ride and tries to soak in the immersion of the world.

If you are the type of person that wants to do nothing but power level... you will hate this game. It's NOT a "typical" MMO, nor should you try to play it that way. Nor should you try to play it EXACTLY like the single player TES games. It stands on it's own.

I'm with ya PenGun. Played all the TES games...first MMO I've tried, started with Doom/Dwango,... and I'm enjoying the heck out of the game.

In addition my wife and I are playing through it together, at a comfortable slow pace, taking our time, and we are having a lot of fun.

Maybe in part that's due to being new to MMO's. What feels stale to some is still fresh for others.

But regardless, we are having fun and I have no regrets.
