Soldak's Next Game

A post on the Soldak Entertainment blog reveals for Soldak's next project, which they are referring to as Game 5, saying development of the game has commenced, and offering some initial details, though they say they are early enough in the process that "anything could change." For now they are describing a zombie survival game using the setting of Depths of Peril and Din's Curse. Here's a bit of the rough plan they outline:

In the DoP/DC world, the zombie infection has mutated and is out of control. Now anything bitten or even scratched by a zombie might be infected. With the easy spread of the zombie infection, the undead are overrunning most of the world. Civilization has been destroyed. There are still pockets of resistance here and there; many of these are not human though.

Your job is to ensure you and your followers survive the zombie apocalypse. While zombies are the most immediate threat, it's not the only one. Critical supplies like food are extremely limited and must be provided or people will starve. Your followers can be infected. Having someone turn inside of your stronghold is bad. Other groups are struggling to survive also. When they run low on supplies, will they trade or attack? Other groups, monsters, and zombies can all attack your stronghold. And finally you have to make sure your followers don't cause problems or kill each other.

Zombie game, blegh, but their latest game, Drox Operative, is actually a ton of fun. A truly dynamic galaxy where every time you play the relationships between the races fluctuate on all ends of the spectrum, and wildly diverging Win conditions allow you to alter your goals on the fly when you see the need to change them.

I very much recommend it.

The whole zombie/vampire thing jumped the shark two years ago at least! Game 5? Sounds as original and creative as the game they're making. Rolleyes

You know, I've been a pretty big fan of zombie games... But even I have to admit that it's getting to be a bit ridiculous.

Indeed. This announcement was the first time I've thought to myself "I'm actually over this zombie thing".

I'm going to sketch up a game concept.
The backstory is you're an indy game developer.
The game progresses with a small game dev making a zombie game, and it gets popular.
Then other devs near it make zombie games. This zombie game design trends for 15 years when the this game takes place.
The current state of affairs is 90% of the game devs are making zombie games, and you have to build up like minded developer friends to work together and make a game so amazing it stops the zombie game horde and you fix the planet...er...industry
