Mod DB now features the
first release version of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Lost Alpha, a modification that
attempts to bring to life a version of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. more closely aligned with
the vision of the game first presented by developer GSC Game World during the
game's development. As they explain, at some point this took on a life of its
own: "We started to develop Lost Alpha in the summer of 2008. The project first
started out as a modification to add back the cut levels which all Stalker fans
knew of. After a while, it became more than just a modification, it became our
dream game, how we saw S.T.A.L.K.E.R. We hope to give you the same feeling when
you first played S.T.A.L.K.E.R. A new chapter with familiar elements without
which S.T.A.L.K.E.R. would not be the game we all grew to love. Lost Alpha was a
labour of love. We are passionate about it and we hope you all will enjoy it as
much as we enjoyed creating it!"

So my question besides graphically how is the gameplay different? Also how is it different from the "complete" mods?

Wow, I was expecting just another mod with new textures and the like but this is a completely different game. If your machine has the stones, go full retard on all options and it looks pretty good. I'm still only in Cordon but there's got to be some levels that are unchanged from the alpha to the, er, omega?
I remember watching the first trailers for STALKER and being very excited. It was the game that I'd always wanted to play.
Didn't quite turn out as expected, but the mod community have done a lot for it.
Will try out this mod when time permits.

Hmm, lots of new content... but it doesn't seem as good as Complete for the rest.

I installed it but skipped the C redistribuable thing and such at the end of installation and the game refused to run. I will have to install again and see, time was missing.

Yup, I read it, it is one of the earliest books on what we see as a post apocalyptic World. It was written behind the iron curtain and the story of how the book was published is just as entertaining as the book itself. Worth the read. The author was well ahead of his time in regards to this genre.

I think you're thinking of Metro for the one based on books.
Most crashes I read about in the forum this morning where from people using the static lighting setting, so if you do risk it (I saw a number of very positive comments) make sure you're not using that.. which is the DirectX8 renderer if I remember correctly.

Reading it's a crash-prone mess at the moment, even for people familiar with the X-Ray engine. I'd hold off a month or two for patching.
