"Theory that buried garbage disappears is debunked."

Theory? Umm, modern science proves that MOST garbage DOES decompose and essentially "disappear" if you leave it in the ground long enough. So a bunch of plastic game cartridges didn't disappear, and that somehow translates to being the rule for ALL buried garbage, huh? Wow. Sad. Some elementary level schooling should be able to help you with that.

Most garbage is in fact, plastic.. which does not decompose. But aside that, you totally did not get the joke

They dug in a landfill for stuff that nobody with a brain doubted was there to begin with. To prove something.... namely that it's there. What a monumental waste of money

You may say what you want about the game, but for something made in assembler, in just 5 weeks from first line of code to release.... this is talked about a remarkable lot 30 years later ;p

Epic find. Achievement unlocked.

I played it at a friends, back then.. He knew how to play it and I thought it wasn't terrible. We had fun for a couple hours. I remember you had to search around the landscape and dive into holes or something like that. It was the console's graphics that sucked too.

I'm surprised they haven't greenlit Atari's ET on Steam...

I swear that some of the crap that's being greenlit nowadays looks even worse than E.T. back in the day. That's just WRONG.

There was doubt about the Atari thing? This was reported at the time it happened. There should never have been any doubt...

I always looked at the story as "did ET specifically do so badly/were so many cartridges overprinted that they were dumped".

Pretty damn cool that the rumor appears to be true. I was a little skeptical at first, thinking that since MS paid for it, they might have prepped a few cartridges ahead of time ("Look! Here's one!"). But now they've produced what appears to be actual boxes of them, I'm pretty much convinced.
