ArcheAge Founder's Packs

Trion announces that Founder's Packs are now available for ArcheAge, XLGames' upcoming fantasy-themed sandbox MMORPG. There are details on the ArcheAge website and the packs are on sale on this page. There are three different levels of participation, with future beta access included in the $49.99 and $99.99 silver and gold packages, and immediate alpha access included with the $149.99 Archeum package. This FAQ answers questions this might raise, and here's a new ArcheAge trailer.

People who part with $150 for early access will be subject to confirmation bias. They are less willing to see fault in something they've paid richly for. Trion are thus assured of having an early fan base who say many positive things about the game, while minimizing negatives. You can't buy that kind of positive buzz. No, in fact, it appears you have to sell it.

Closest I can tell what the powers do.

"Necromancy" doesn't even know what a skeleton pet is. It has two pets, neither of which lasts 10 seconds before expiring. i.e. they're normal attacks/whatever wrapped in a pet animation instead of glowies flying around.

Why are these games rocketting 180 degrees in the wrong direction, wtf.

You know, I used to love MMOs.. Ultima Online/Everquest/Asheron's Call/Etc.

Now they're all crappy clones of each other with purposely built time sink grinds that just seem so bad. I used to look forward to MMO's and now I see shit like this and so glad I don't play any of them anymore.

This will be another one that shuts down after the hype phase.

10000000% this. UO and AC1 Darktide were amazing...

The along came WOW and the whole genre went to sheet.

So this is a new game or it's been out for over a year in Asia? If so, how can there be nothing on the classes -- their own web side doesn't even have clicks for what the 10 skill trees do.

I don't care if people want to buy founders packs or early access. I think it actually increases the chance of a completed game or better quality game if the devs can get an infusion of money while still in development. Anyway, there's nothing we can do to stop it.

That being said, not going to be spending my own money in such a capacity.

Theres plenty who will happily pay 150 to get in. Realitically, the full game wont be out for yonks so its 150 divided by however long until release. Call it a year (and im being optimistic condsidering theres three tiers) and youve got an average 8 or 9 squid sub per month with the bonus of getting access now.

That's assuming players don't care about having all their characters deleted when moving to beta and to live. Even on the website FAQ it states "Please treat time on Alpha as helping test and having an early experience with the game – not as progress that will be preserved." Trion is just exploiting those crazy fans that can't wait another minute to get their hands on an unfinished copy of the game.

Hell, they should have made it $500 and they'd probably get a few that would pay that as well. Maybe some dev will start selling $10,000 early access and those that do can join the developer's design meetings!!!! Pay them $50,000 and you can work as a developer and contribute content to the game! This early access income model for devs has a lot left to be exploited! I can't wait to see what the future brings.

Hate the asian art style. Love what they're trying to do content wise. However this sounds really, really bad. Oh well, another one bites the dust.

Precisely why I won't do EA and am pretty much done with KS. Sell me a finished product that's good and works well and you may then have my money and not otherwise.

This founder pack shit is getting ridiculous. I'll toss a few dollars here and there at a kickstarter, but $150 for a game you probably wouldn't pay $20 for at retail is fucking stupid.

And it has microtransactions... Really not liking this trend.

Within the past year there has been an explosion of 'early access' games on steam and these 'founders packs' (too many to count). Like you said it's getting very ridiculous. I think game devs and publishers have caught on to the fact that there are many gamers out there that will buy their games even before they are finished developing it. It's funny though that anyone would pay top dollar to play a shitty alpha version of any game. What gets me is that there is no guarantee that the devs (especially the indie ones) will even finish the game. Beyond their reputation, what incentive do they have if they feel they already earned enough money from the early access and that it's not worth continuing development?

Have any of you seen the latest updates on the Korean servers. This game is rapidly becoming a "milk the playerbase for as much cash as possible" game.

Trion is really going to drag their name through mud if all the Korean cost changes make it in. Even the Koreans are loudly complaining.
