When I look at Metacritic, I compare how well the critic's score lines up with the user's score. If a game has an 80 from journalists but users only give a 7.2, I'll be extra cautious. Flipsidewise, a game that has a journalists score of 74 but the users give it 8.0 is almost certainly a buy. Seems like journalists are often influenced by things other than fun.

I more often find users are influenced by things like needing to give a 0 or a 10 to a developer they feel slighted them or praised them without having actually played the game. Some are smarter about it and do 2s or 9s.

I can't even work out what I'm interested in with Steam anymore. The fucking signal to noise ratio with all this greenlight shit makes it difficult to find a game that baits me enough to investigate reviews...

I find game "journalists" to be pretty disconnected and generally awful at videogames too. After listening to Giant Bomb trash Demons Souls because they were dumb I wouldn't trust them to review a mobile game for example.

Peer reviews yes. Game "journalist" reviews no.

Anything I buy anymore tends to be because I've seen other gamers express their delight with the game. Most gaming journalists are either shills or have played so many games they have very different expectations as to what constitutes a "good" game. Plus any gaming marketing firm worth its salt can make a pile of crap game look like a wondrous, life changing adventure, that's full of fun and merriment.
