Origins Ditches Discs

The Origin website announces EA's online store is dropping physical discs and going online only (thanks VideoGamer.com). Word is:
Starting April 4th Origin will be going all digital. This means the entire Origin game store will be entirely digital downloads for PC and Mac.

What does this mean for you? If you're among 99% of our users, absolutely nothing. Your shopping experience hasn't changed one single bit.

But if you're that 1% who still desires a physical collection, we want to let you know that Origin won't be able to fulfill that need beginning April 4th. We’ll still be here when you transition your gaming habits to the wonders of digital downloads.

Digital is fast and convenient. Origin’s focus is to give gamers the best experience, and going all-digital will make that possible.

They used to sell Valve's The Orange Box, which was extra ironic...

Uh ok, so... if someone buys a EA Game on disk from Amazon/Gamestop or where-ever, they can't use the key on Origin? I assume this means they are just not selling the disks on Origin and leaving that to third party distributors.

Yeah that is what it means I believe.
Just like how Steam doesn't sell any discs but you can redeem "CD-keys" in Steam.

Trying to remember the last time I bought game disks outside of Collector's Editions... I'm thinking it was the Orange Box.

By the way I don't think you could use the keys on Origin from actual CD/DVDs anyways.
I've had BF2 on a disc and could not add the CD key to my Origin library. I got invalid CD key error.
Ended up buying the whole BF complete set from Origin when it was on sale for $5, in case my disc gets scratched or something.

I believe you can contact EA about it and get updated keys that do work on origin. You may need to send in a picture of your CDs and key, not sure.

Depends on the game. I know my disc copies of Dead Space and Burnout Paradise, for example, both registered on Origin, despite being older than Origin itself (although to be fair, BP did use the old EA CORE online system).

Oh ok I guess it depends on the game than.
BF2 is a pretty dang old game so no surprise there.

You open a support ticket, and they convert your keys to digital only keys.

If you have older games on disc that are available to purchase on Origin, call their tech support. I got bf2, bf2192 or whatever number it is, and C&C3 converted, and each one came with all dlc, despite me not having it in the first place.
I'm not a fan of having more than one distribution platform, but EA converting my games with little hassle was nice. I realize it's to entice me into using their platform more, which it doesn't.

Anyway, on-subject: the lack of discs is ONLY an issue if EA uses it as a way to keep prices high. No retailers trying to dump excess stock means no pricing competition when they have the ONLY place to get their games. Despite their poor track record, they occasionally do have a good game here and there still. If they continue their sales as they've been doing, I don't see the disc-less EA as a bad thing.

Eh, it was impressive they were supporting discs for this long. Anyone who is still not on digital by now is just deluding him/herself. (Psst, all three of you: It's not going away.)

I don't think that has anything to do with it. I don't believe EA's numbers for a bit (they claim like 40+ million users), but even so Origin is, perhaps sadly, doing pretty well for them.

This is purely done to save costs for printing discs and the like.

That doesn't make sense, I have BF3, and all dead space games on disk. In origin there is an "activate disk key" option just like steam, and the game simply installs from the disk.

The point of having a physical copy is in case of poor connection (my ISP sucks and takes forever to download a full game), retaining a historical copy to install and play at any time as consoles get to have, but no more on PC is retarded (something purely downloadable digital is less meaningful).

It's so like EA not to understand that the files on disks are 100% digital, too. In fact, they are the same files, exactly.
It is well known that I cannot err--and so, if you should happen across an error in anything I have written you can be absolutely sure that *I* did not write it!...;)
