Dead Space Free on Origin

EA's Origin service is now offering the original Dead Space as a free download with no strings attached beyond requiring an Origin registration. They explain on a new page devoted to a new "On The House" promotion:
Free?! What's the catch?
There's no catch. Grab full games, expansions and more at absolutely no cost. Just make sure to act fast because On the House specials can appear and disappear at any time.

You mean a trial or demo, right?
Nope. You’re getting a full version of the real game — for free!

How long will I own the game?
Once you’ve claimed your game, it’s yours to keep!

Why is Origin doing this?
We're gamers, too. We appreciate you making Origin your gaming home ... and besides, who doesn't like free stuff?

Sure there's a catch - you have to register for Origin. I've managed to avoid that since it came out. I still don't feel like I've missed anything.

I suppose this answers the question "not even if it was free?".

Meh, I have no problem with Origin. It's stable, unobtrusive and works. At least from my experience

Oh, good, I got this ages ago on D2D and every time I would DL to play it, it would be corrupted and not work. Even tried again recently again on Gamefly. So, maybe I'll be able to play this finally.

Signing up was a complete cluster. I went through three email address before I got it to work. It's been fine since then. I only bring it up when I want to play something on it, like BF2142 or one of the EA Humble Bundle games I've got on there.

Not to mention if you have a problem an actual person will call or e-mail you before hell freezes over. One of the crap things about the whole Valve/Steam "flat management" bullshit.

I highly doubt their management structure carries over to the call center in India. They probably sell a lot more games than Origin.

Huh, you know, I must be blessed or something, because the only time I had problems with Steam I got help by e-mail from Steam support.

Origin: searched your Skype logs, was a big scandal when it broke a couple years back.

Steam: Slowly trying to become as cool as GOG by allowing refunds and such.

GOG: The Bee's knees.

That's about it.

Same here. I'd love to play DA3 and ME3, but as a PC gamer I won't see them unless they put them on Steam.

Won't touch Origin. No point. Gog and Steam fulfill all my needs as a gamer. Origin would be a third wheel.

Is David DeMartini still in charge of Origin? When this bloke was asked about discounts in Origin, similar to Steam sales. Here was his reply "We won't be doing that. ... I just think it cheapens your intellectual property .... just don't look for 75 percent off going-out-of-business sales."

I hate to say this - but I did get really good help when I contacted them about my BF Veteran number. Had to send some screens over of my cases and keys.... they converted my keys to Origin keys and it popped in there....

I'll add to this: I originally ordered a digital copy of TOR, when it looked like the CEs were sold out (they went on sale at like midnight and were sold out by like 4am, before I got up). But some time later, more CEs were made available through amazon and the like. I got one of those, saw Origin had a toll free support number and called them:

I got right through, the person was easy to understand (they sounded american) and had a refund processed for the digital order in under 5 minutes.

I've yet to have THAT kind of service with steam.

edit: It's also the only time I've used origin.

I'm sure the application itself is fine. It's just that, to me, it's not only redundant (in the sense that it does the same thing as Steam), but it's also extremely limited (to a single publisher's catalog).

That said, I do have Arc installed. However, that's only because PWE/Cryptic did promotions for Neverwinter and Star Trek Online where you could claim some minor, but free stuff if you logged in to those games through Arc. That was it. Afterwards, you could continue playing both games through Steam.

I keep Arc installed, though, because the thought of uninstalling it makes me feel like an exploitative d-bag.

I thought I remember reading something somewhere where that guy said he'd rather give it away for free than discount it. Discounting cheapens the product and damages the brand, but when you give something away, it is a gift and doesn't lose value.

It's true, hate on EA all you want, I'll still take them over Valve and Steam when it comes to CS. Valve's hippy lovefest 'do what you feel' bullshit translates into really bad CS. Well maybe not so much bad, as nearly non-existent. At least EA still gets that this is, in fact, a business.
