Facebook Acquires Oculus, Oculus Rift Minecraft Cancelled

Facebook has acquired Oculus, paying a reported $2 billion for the virtual reality startup, which Forbes says is $400 million in cash and 23.1 million shares of Facebook stock, and the deal includes another potential $300 in incentives. "Mobile is the platform of today, and now we’re also getting ready for the platforms of tomorrow," Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg said in a statement. "Oculus has the chance to create the most social platform ever, and change the way we work, play and communicate." There's some immediate fallout from this as Markus "notch" Persson tweets (thanks nin via Joystiq) that this has ended the possibility of an Oculus version of Minecraft: "We were in talks about maybe bringing a version of Minecraft to Oculus. I just cancelled that deal. Facebook creeps me out."

gone from must have to ah shit.

Is it just me, or has all the cool computer stuff (capabilities, personal communication etc) over the past 30 years become monetized, tools of surveillance and utterly zero data privacy.

But it's also all become significantly cheaper.

That said, I truly believe there's no way to monetize data with VR sets. And, if anything, I think this purchase proves it. I guess OR had a chance to be the standard and control the software, but with FB owning them I see devs very quickly trying to get a standard that supports any set regardless of manufacturer.

Again, I think ORs software is basically Glide, but we'll move to DirectX or OpenGL. But even that's not quite right because that has more to do with graphics cards, which are complicated. VR sets are more like monitors. Quick: name 3 monitor companies. You can't, because there are so many with each basically being exactly like the next. It's a total commodity, with only a few players remaining in the high end (I do love my Dell Ultrasharp IPS.)
