Steamships Ahoy - Betrayer

Independent studio Blackpowder Games announces the release of Betrayer on Steam, a self-funded action/adventure game designed by a team that includes veterans of Monolith's No One Lives Forever series and the original F.E.A.R. The is still listed as early access today, but will official launch today, so there's a still a short opportunity to buy it at its discounted introductory price. This is how the game is described:

Now available on Steam, Betrayer is an eerie, suspenseful action adventure in which players traverse a mysteriously abandoned New World colony in 1604, trying to piece together what happened to its inhabitants and survive the supernatural threats they encounter along the way.

“Betrayer is the kind of game we’ve been wanting to make ever since we shipped FEAR,” says the game’s designer and writer, Craig Hubbard. “You can explore large, open environments in search of clues and loot. You can tackle challenges aggressively or stealthily. You can outfit yourself with the equipment that best suits your play style. It’s a very player-driven experience.”

It's like this creepy, unchangeable dream!

Oh damn, did I spoiler it?

Also the devs are quite active and responsive on the Steam forum, which gets points in my book.

I pity any dev who hangs out on the steam forums, as it must be a soul crushing experience, based on some of the people that post there.

This thread made me lol. Such fine sarcasm.

I've played a few hours of it since this evening after having bought it upon release. It's actually quite fun so far, though not especially scary yet IMHO. I enjoy the large maps, open-worldish gameplay, and the vulnerability you feel resulting from the relatively primitive weapons.

Also the devs are quite active and responsive on the Steam forum, which gets points in my book.

I'm not getting this because it's b/w. If I could change it, I'd probably get it.

Lol, more of a water and chips kinda guy. The above is way too American for me.

I haven't played much of the game, so will have to wait and see tonight how interesting/good it really is.

BTW, you can change the colour/saturation settings

Ouch, early reviews average at 40. Quite sad.

I think it may be because of the FORCED black and white graphics. There's absolutely no way of changing that. :p

Not a big fan of the black and white, but the rest of the game looks intriguing.
You can change it.

I can read you know. I worry that it kind of defeats the purpose of what the developer was going for though, and if the game experience would suffer as a result of doing so.

On a side note, I wonder if you can change it.

Is this that weird black & white thing?

This is only a bad thing for all you c00l kids with your modern color monitors. My monochrome crt is still l33t! And now I'm boing back to playing some more Pong in fabulous b/w! Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Now if I could just remember where I put my Hercules graphics card.
