BioShock Infinite DLC to Add 1998 Mode

Irrational Games announces a new stealthy, nonlethal 1998 mode coming to BioShock Infinite in the upcoming Burial at Sea – Episode Two DLC for the shooter prequel. "In Burial at Sea – Episode Two we put a focus on balance and stealth mechanics," explains Ken Levine, creative director of Irrational Games. "As we were developing this new style of gameplay, we started to see people self-impose non-lethal playthrough’s. Given the fan reception of 1999 Mode, we thought it would be cool to give them another way to play Burial at Sea that challenged their mastery of stealth tools."

I thought it was an allusion to the Tomb Raider box. But that was 1996.

I think its supposed to resemble the 'Thief' box.
Ahh, so it is. The only version of the Thief box I was familiar with was the square one. But they reused the Tomb Raider trapezoid for Thief at one point too.

Thief box

PC FF7 was also released in a box like that. I think it's still the only somewhat valuable game I have in my collection. Though I don't see it going for the hundreds that it used to on ebay.

I find it funny that people praised BioShock Infinite for its 1999 Mode but only 2% of people actually finished the game on that mode.

Guess those 2% of people must be happy about 1998 mode.

Sorry. Have to vent after losing $40 on the new game.

And what did you learn?
Not sure what you mean here. I buy all games that look intereting to me.
Sometimes i win sometimes i lose. There i felt bad, mostly because that game which is actually totally on rails (like that rambo game..) really shouldnt have been using that title. All that from a team who shouldnt have disappointed either.
On another note i never bought Diablo 3 even though i'm a fan of the genre, due to having played TQ:IT and being on PoE which are pretty much the real successors to Diablo series. Also a lot is coming our way in that genre, without having to give to my addiction and fork some dollars for D3.

That is a huge jab at the dismal "Thief" that's just been out, since Ken L was involved in the original Thief and System Shock 2.
His game mode for Bioshock Inifinite is probably better than the just released "Thief" game Which i find hilarious. He even shows he's better at box art.

How about AK47 mode? You know, like when you absolutely, positively have to kill every motherfucker in the room.
Pretty sure that was in all the game so far. Might be wrong, since I'm standing in a virtual pile of corpses listening to a madman rant about Comstock, but...who knows. Maybe I could avoid killing all those guys to get to him in the first place...

What would be really cool is if they managed to implement this in the original Bioshock Infinite. No way that would happen, would require a lot of re-working, but at least a stealthier-options-approach would be cool to have.

I can't wait to play Burial at Sea Episode Two though, especially in 1998 mode. Love me some stealth!

har har Ken Levine, it has to be a "mode" since its not "mainstream" - what else is there, inventory management, less on rails, and more non-linear?
