Star Citizen Hits $39M; Procedural Generation Goal Announced

A new Letter from the Chairman on the Roberts Space Industries website celebrates the news that the crowd-sourced funding for Star Citizen has passed the $39 million plateau, unlocking the next stretch goal of "the penultimate user-chosen star system" (thanks 88fingers). When the game hit $38 million, Chairman Roberts teased "a new goal that will help chart the course for the future of Star Citizen in a different way," which he now reveals to be a Procedural Generation R&D Team, saying "If we can develop a truly great procedural generation system, one that lets us create entire planets for you to populate, then we can expand the game to add these features (and more) in the future." Here's more on their $40 million stretch goal:
Procedural Generation R&D Team – This stretch goal will allocate funding for Cloud Imperium to develop procedural generation technology for future iterations of Star Citizen. Advanced procedural generation will be necessary for creating entire planets worth of exploration and development content. A special strike team of procedural generation-oriented developers will be assembled to make this technology a reality.

Most people ask this about the game; whether they can manually land their ship or decide to go off somewhere and explore a part of the planet. So, I think this is a very nice stretch goal as it meets the desires of a large part of the playerbase.

The thing that I find unanswered is whether it would be possible to go from space to atmospheric flight to ground without any need for a loading screen. From what I know, that is extremely difficult considering the vast distances involved in a single planet and trying to mesh that with the rest of space.

I think they will probably have a switch between space and atmospheric flight, given those difficulties involved.

Calling it, this game wont be fully released until 2016.

I agree. I'm predicting a Duke Nukem Forever type of timeline and underwhelming eventual release.

FoV slider is going to be in the final game. Currently you can adjust it in the hangar module with the cryengines console.

Which many not so tech savvy people naturally don't know about so they get sick as fuck from the default 55(!!!) FoV. And CIG could not be bothered to just put the default at 75 or 80 via a simple user.cfg entry in over seven months now. Why is it that so many devs always fail at the really simple and easy stuff?

I worthy goal for another million.. A FOV Slider.

Funny but true -- you cannot bet that devs will be experienced enough to ensure a FOV adjustment.

These new goals are entirely reasonable, and will in no way delay the release of this game.

I will definitely be interested when(if) this game is released, but holy shit, take it easy people. Stop buying thousands of dollars worth of virtual goods for a game that isn't even out yet.
