Star Citizen Hits $39M; Procedural Generation Goal Announced

A new Letter from the Chairman on the Roberts Space Industries website celebrates the news that the crowd-sourced funding for Star Citizen has passed the $39 million plateau, unlocking the next stretch goal of "the penultimate user-chosen star system" (thanks 88fingers). When the game hit $38 million, Chairman Roberts teased "a new goal that will help chart the course for the future of Star Citizen in a different way," which he now reveals to be a Procedural Generation R&D Team, saying "If we can develop a truly great procedural generation system, one that lets us create entire planets for you to populate, then we can expand the game to add these features (and more) in the future." Here's more on their $40 million stretch goal:
Procedural Generation R&D Team – This stretch goal will allocate funding for Cloud Imperium to develop procedural generation technology for future iterations of Star Citizen. Advanced procedural generation will be necessary for creating entire planets worth of exploration and development content. A special strike team of procedural generation-oriented developers will be assembled to make this technology a reality.

Roberts must have been more impressed by Elite:Dangerous than we first believed.

What will be handcrafted are the systems, their planets as seen from space, main starports and cities.

What about the rest of the planet, however? That is where the procedural generation comes in. I imagine they want to create territory and sprinkle it with goodies such as ruins, caves, etc where you can find very rare items. When a vote was done long ago as to what players wanted to do most in the SC universe, 'Explore' got a huge share of the vote.

I thought the big selling point was the "Imagine Engine" where the render, gameplay, sound, server systems where all in your head?

Impressed by Elite:Dangerous? pfft Whatever, That game is miles behind on making a cool hangar.

(tbh - I'm truly starting to think that they don't know what they are doing. I think they should have stuck to the SQ42 plan then move onto SC as a new project after SQ42 was done. What they are doing now is just asking to turn into managment hell imho.)

Why not? No Man's Sky is doing it and that's 3 coders, 1 artist and almost no budget to speak of. That aside I have yet to see PG do anything interesting. It's all just the same thing with minor variations. Big whoop. Do you really want visit planets that are entirely or mostly empty? Even MMOs learned long ago that huge swaths of space with nothing to do in them aren't fun.

And you can't tell me these planets will be great places to explore with vast cities, completely full of autonomous citizens all doing their own thing. This is the problem with space games like this. Trade or fight or both but it gets repetitious quickly. That's why the idea to strive for is a Star Trek like game where there can be trade and combat, but also exploration, science and diplomacy - and I mean fully realized 3D, not just a 4X game.

This stretch goal sounds pretty boring and useless actually. It'd be far better to see the money going to crafting actual experiences for the player.

thats the plan for the release, but as stated they plan on doing research on pg and atmospheric flight so I'm hoping many a gamers dreams will become reality if they can pull off some amazing new tech.

best stretch goal yet.
for 40$ I think it's pretty much a no brainer for me to help the cause, really glad they will be pushing the tech for pg and wish them the best of luck to make something amazing

Calling it, this game wont be fully released until 2016.

The full release of this game might end up being a mute point. The dogfighter module (aka alpha) is going to be here soon and the ETA on teh first chapter of the sq42 (intro and missions 1-10) is supposed to be released by the end of the year. Episodic after that.

The DFM module is likely going to feel like a very meaty experience in a few months. They're building it to be as functional as it will be in the full game just with a smaller scope. Expect to see it grow into a system where you can jump in, group up with others, go out into space, then the system can match you versus other teams of similar strength, just like we should see in the full game.

It should allow a person flying a single ship to find similar match ups (competitive matches). After that you can expect FPS elements to be added so we could see ship disabling and boarding in the DFM but they will probably hold that stuff back until the Sq42 missions come out just so that stuff has the effect they want.

It's all shaping up very well. If you haven't seen this you should watch it. Every time a new hangar update comes out ppl go and rip the files out to see what else they included that we can't see. The video shows an example of what flying a hornet and a 300i might look like. This isn't official, it's just what they can create from the stuff we have.

Does anyone have concern that spending $35 on this is too big a risk? Are you fucking high? $35.
