Respawn Attacks Titanfall Bribery Claims

A post on NeoGAF from Respawn Entertainment's Drew McCoy reacts to conspiracy theories suggesting that Titanfall's positive reception is the result of them bribing corrupt game journalists to favor the mech shooter (thanks OXM via VG247). Here's what he had to say:
Anyone who thinks we weren't living in the shadow of decade+ old established franchises at our reveal at E3 are as crazy as their conspiracy theories of anyone getting paid off. We've had to fight tooth and nail to have a game that anyone would even know existed, let alone be excited for and want to create coverage of. I get it that its not for everyone, but to say we're paying anyone off is downright insanity. Not to mention the height of insulting.

I have not been paid to say that Titanfall is the best FPS that has ever been made, but based on my experiences with the beta, I am doing so. It is one of a few AAA games I can remember where the price tag doesn't piss me off. They deserve every cent. They have done something genuinely new and interesting with this genre, which is something that can be said about almost none of the rest of it for the past several years.

I don't know, Titanfall didn't feel like a mech game to me. Maybe mech-lite. No deformation, really poor destruction decals, battles between them felt cartoony and fleeting. It was ok but I didn't really get all of the hoopla about that game. I had more fun ground pounding with wallrunning and double jumps.

It's not a mech game. I don't feel it's at all intended to be one, and people who call it one or expect it to be one are missing the point. The "hoopla" is that it's an FPS with a beautifully innovative reward system. The most common, interesting, powerful, and fun reward is that you can use a heavily armed giant robot, something which is definitely distinct from a mech because it doesn't turn like a pig or require a minimum of seventeen buttons to effectively operate.

Though you can probably guess I'm terrible at them, I like the idea of sims, but Titanfall is for when you're in a completely different mood. It's something that looks at Unreal or Call of Duty and says "wait, you didn't finish this idea. Let me fix that." Between the traversal system and what I understand the campaign mode is going to be, it's also going to pretty much be what Brink would've been if it ever worked properly. That is why people are excited about it. The big robots are an excellent game mechanic and an expression of the dev's design ethos, not the central focus of the game.

I like the Beta a lot! As a Mech fan who like many has waited for years to have the type of experience where you can get out/in to your Ride.... this is a welcome sight. I think the last time we could do that was in what??? Shogo?

As for how low amount the player slots are? Tbh I am sick of huge mp games now. Think BF here. I wanna see what the Final Release will be like. But so far I can`t complain. I LIKE the vision TitanFall is presenting.

I won't be buying it when it is finished, as I am not a fan of squad-based online-only shooters.

Pretty much why I have zero interest...

I played the beta a bit. It's pretty, but clearly not finished yet. I was frustrated by having control of my avatar taken from me so I could watch for 45 - 60 seconds as someone else killed me. If this is a feature, it's a bad one.

I won't be buying it when it is finished, as I am not a fan of squad-based online-only shooters.

Paid journalists off? That's insanity!

Now, let me get back to organizing that paid trip to our offices for in-person demos and making sure the journalists are sufficiently fueled with potato chips, soda, and one-dollar bills for the evening activities.

Just like Polygon only took a Microsoft donation for their documentary. This game was practically sainted by the press within hours of E3, obviously there is some moneyhatting going on here.

Anyone else get to test out the beta?
I've liked it quiet a bit but not sure I'll drop the money for the game at launch.
