Respawn Attacks Titanfall Bribery Claims

A post on NeoGAF from Respawn Entertainment's Drew McCoy reacts to conspiracy theories suggesting that Titanfall's positive reception is the result of them bribing corrupt game journalists to favor the mech shooter (thanks OXM via VG247). Here's what he had to say:
Anyone who thinks we weren't living in the shadow of decade+ old established franchises at our reveal at E3 are as crazy as their conspiracy theories of anyone getting paid off. We've had to fight tooth and nail to have a game that anyone would even know existed, let alone be excited for and want to create coverage of. I get it that its not for everyone, but to say we're paying anyone off is downright insanity. Not to mention the height of insulting.

I love how you seem to be under the mistaken impression that I need to justify anything at all to you. Next time you want actual discourse, don't start off with a bunch childish bullshit.

I don't know why you're getting so defensive and emotional

Yeah. I doubt anyone thinks Respawn is doing it, but it's hard to believe that EA isn't. His response is like being pissed that people associate you with mobsters while you're eating pastrami with the Gambini family.

With MS pegging this as one of their flagship exclusives to get people to buy an XBOX ONE I seriously doubt Respawn or EA have had to do anything to pump it up. I'm sure MS has all those bases covered.

It's not, but I'm not sure that after living in the US for 12 years that's really a distinction anymore.

My wife has lived in the US for 12 years, still can't speak English.

I keep telling you man, you have to let her have some kind interactive media in that basement. A TV or something. I am not saying you have to actually unlock her chain from the bed or let her use Internet. Gods no! If you want her to learn the language she has to hear people using it though. People she isn't in fear of. When you speak to her she isn't focusing on the words, just the tone of your voice. She needs to hear other people using the same language. Obviously you can't let her interact with other people so a TV is a good substitute. If not a TV at least the radio. Also, make sure her daily rations have plenty of protein. Helps the brain.

They also ripped the 'other team won but you can escape so you dont feel bad about losing maybe!' shit straight from BF2142. In fact this whole game is pretty much a miasma of derivative nerdisms.

I agree with most of the other posts, game is sorta fun sometimes when you aren't dying from random directions with no possible way to prevent your death but I don't see myself playing it alot. I played beta for 8 to 10 hours which I'm sure is long enough to be told I spent too much in it but short enough that I also suck at it and don't know what I'm talking about.

When someone calls it a crazy conspiracy theory, you know you're on the right track. Where's there's smoke, there's fire.

That's funny. I heard you weren't actually born to a woman, but rather cloned from the preserved wang of Adolf Hitler.

Do you deny this? If so, I must be on the right track!

Not sure how well you were scoring on the leaderboard per game but if you think the grunts are useless and the titans boring, I'm guessing not very high.

The most common, interesting, powerful, and fun reward is that you can use a heavily armed giant robot, something which is definitely distinct from a mech because it doesn't turn like a pig or require a minimum of seventeen buttons to effectively operate.

There is literally the exact same thing in Blacklight: Retribution, except smaller in scale.

yeah this game doesn't really tickle my stompy robot fetish like OG mechwarrior does. shogo/hawken/virtual on always felt like... just, dudes fighting. never had the weight of giant mechanized combat.

Believe me, that's what everyone who liked Mechwarrior back in the day feels...

Titanfall feels like you are just a bigger fatter dude walking around with slightly bigger pew-pew guns... and Titans bump into every small geometry element. It feels broken, as if Titans were an afterthought.

Isn't the majority of the press focusing on xbox one? I think some of the enthusiasm is simply down to a lack of games available for the new console.

Now? Sure, I just seem to remember it being odd how amazing the press thought titanfall going back to E3 2013. Fast forward to today and maybe it's just that we've had time to hear a lot about it but playing the beta was satisfying but not what I expected from the glowing opinions people said a while back.

It's a great game, for free it's fantastic, for $60 on a $500 console ($600 after tax and a live sub fee) it's not enough. It's a pass in my book until it's cheaper. $40 maybe. I think I'll likely trade for it with another game. (Although I may be waiting a month or more...)

I had fun with the demo. (Let's stop calling these beta tests shall we?)

It reminded me of the type of fun I used to have in Unreal Tournament games. I went ahead and pre-ordered it from g2a.com for 45.00. To me I think it will be worth that.

It's fun, but I'm not interested in paying $60 at launch to play it. I'll watch people play it on release and see if there is enough content to change my mind. The demo felt pretty sparse but I hear the full version has 13 maps? Plus multiple titans, obviously more weapons to play with. I'm not convinced all that is going to be enough to change my opinion.

I'm considering picking a day I can play all day and buying it on Origin, then within 24 hours I'm not happy with it I'll return it. That might be fun to do on the thursday or friday after launch... (definitely not launch day)

Thats exactly what EA and their "partners" try to do - to make ppl accept games as "entertainment" and charge you per view/hours like movies.

I have not been paid to say that Titanfall is the best FPS that has ever been made

I 100% agree.
This is HIGH praise. Which makes me very skeptical of comments like this being made about a product still in beta. Best FPS ever made...mmmmmmm.....

I don't think it's unusual that some people feel this way. Others don't. It does look cool, and the Titans make it unique, so it would be surprising if at least a few people didn't feel this way. But based on the comments here, if the metacritic comes in at 95%, THEN I'll be suspicious. But I have no problem with some people saying "best ever."

Also, don't forget that "Beta" these days often means "we're finished, and we want to market it by providing it for free for a couple of days."
