Respawn Attacks Titanfall Bribery Claims

A post on NeoGAF from Respawn Entertainment's Drew McCoy reacts to conspiracy theories suggesting that Titanfall's positive reception is the result of them bribing corrupt game journalists to favor the mech shooter (thanks OXM via VG247). Here's what he had to say:
Anyone who thinks we weren't living in the shadow of decade+ old established franchises at our reveal at E3 are as crazy as their conspiracy theories of anyone getting paid off. We've had to fight tooth and nail to have a game that anyone would even know existed, let alone be excited for and want to create coverage of. I get it that its not for everyone, but to say we're paying anyone off is downright insanity. Not to mention the height of insulting.

It's very possible that the game simply IS this good. I haven't played it, so I can't judge it. The videos make it look pretty decent, if also fairly standard pew pew pew hitscan multiplayer fare.

However, Drew McCoy, the publisher who is going to be publishing your game is absolutely very well known for paying people for positive opinions (or making it nigh impossible to give a negative one.) In fact, they are in the news for such horseshit just about once a month.

So for you to get all uppity and pretend like you work for some kind of bastion of game virtue is really quite amusing. Why do people suspect that opinions on your game have been bought? Well, because it's happened before, frequently, and because gamers are getting a bit tired of constantly being lied to by the shitheels that infest this industry.

This is the environment you work in, an environment that many of your fellow workers in this industry helped foster. Welcome to the real world.

I always enjoy reading your comments. I'm sitting here laughing at your colorful use of words and agreeing with pretty much all of them.

As for how low amount the player slots are? Tbh I am sick of huge mp games now. Think BF here. I wanna see what the Final Release will be like. But so far I can`t complain. I LIKE the vision TitanFall is presenting.

Clearly, you were paid off by EA to write that comment.

I agree that it is a base to build upon... but I fear that Call of Duty: Call Dutier is exactly the type of expanding they will do. :/

Beamer: I think that says a good amount about how fun it is.

I've played the ESO beta for upwards of 30 hours, and I think it's terrible and devoid of fun. Part of being in/getting in to a beta is to make sure you put enough time in it to properly evaluate and stress/bug test a game. That doesn't always equate to enjoying the experience. If all you do is play the game casually... then you are really wasting that beta key.

Maybe because other games aren't as fun as this one, so people will overlook some of it's flaws because the positives outweigh the negatives.

For me it was providing me the 30-60 mins fun per day after work to just run around kill some people in a big mech suit without much time investment into grinding to get better guns or curse at my team mates for sucking.

Kind of like CoD was before it started sucking.

Now I understand this game is not for everyone and some people dislike these type of games but why is it necessary to label people who likes this game and those who doesn't I just don't get it.

That help clarify what shill means, sport?

I was calling it redundant. He's the damn producer. He made this game.

That clarify why calling a man that made something a shill for that thing is a bit redundant, sport?

I think it's a good game just not a great one and I'm surprised it's getting a pass on some aspects people would crucify other games for.

Like DangerDog said though, sometimes the best games are the ones to come and for a first entry its definitely good. I'd be very interested in what they do with an expanded sequel and regardless it's got more going for it than Call of Duty these days.

It's really just average to good IMO, some people here are playing it up way too much. I logged 20ish hours with the beta and thought the movement and general flow of the game is excellent but the hitscan weaponry is all samey, the AI grunts are a waste of space and I thought the Titans themselves were extremely boring to use.

20 hours. In 6 days? You did over 3 hours a day?

I think that says a good amount about how fun it is. Based on that, I'd lean towards the high end of your "average to good."

People whined endlessly about the AI, but it turns out they're exactly what I expected - cannon fodder to blow the crap out of. Seems fun.

I'm pretty excited for this game. Excited enough to buy an Xbox One? No, though I still expect there will be a livelier community there than on PC. I'm not even excited enough to download the demo. And I probably won't buy it on the 360. Not even sure I'll ever play this.
But it looks like the most entertaining action FPS in a while.

First of all, it's a casual shooter. Perhaps that's off putting to many people but I feel like it's intended audience is people wanting to have fun for a few hours at the end of the day. From the unlock progression being fast to the "stupid ai" minions the whole thing is setup to be a game that you consume rather than something you need to turn into your second job or need to agonize over to master - except perhaps the parkour stuff.

The game definitely plays better than it looks in trailers or even watching other people play, especially people who try to play it like a normal flat-foot shooter. Anyways, it doesn't check off every box but I think it'll be successful enough for a Titanfall 2 where perhaps they'll be able to expand the potential of the game to the fullest. The beta/demo wasn't the latest version of the game, the release version will address things like the 60fps cap and some of the other bugs/issues.

For around $40 I think it's fun enough to take the plunge, who pays full retail for games anyway?

I've heard people were using that smart pistol with the cloak ability combined to sneak up on other players, but like you said even cloaked players can be seen, I've shot many of them.

I didn't find the flow of the game very conducive to sneaking anyway, you're better off setting up ambushes with wallhangs and stuff like that. The time to kill between players is already very high so the smart pistol is a non-factor most of the time, you just use it to farm bots or better yet not at all

I didn't use it at all. Other then in the training mission where I've had to.
I was focusing more on the bot battles because I found them more entertaining then the foot soldiering.
Although I did have some memorable moments on foot also. killing an enemy titan with your anti titan weapon is very satisfying, also having the perk in your titan that it sets of a big explosion when it is killed managed to earn me a kill, then me and the other titan pilot duked it out on foot after we both ejected from the bots.
It was funny.

I am fully aware that you can see the cloak when it's on your screen.

It takes about ten years to line up a lethal attack on a pilot

Also fully aware of this.

Unfortunately because of the combination of cloak (no matter how visible it is, you don't always notice it) and completely free-roam environments... players actually have those ten years to line up as many auto-shots as they want. It also auto-targets you through smoke and fire.. things you can't actually see through. There's no sense in defending the smart pistol. It's clearly in the game for console babies that can't actually aim pistols. It should have stayed on consoles though.

I didn't find the parkour difficult at all, in fact it was almost too easy to scale buildings.

On way more than half of the kills I got in the beta (and this goes for all weapons now, I didn't use the smart pistol much), the other pilot had no idea where I was attacking from and definitely never had any chance of escaping. TTK is entirely too quick, and you can ambush from almost any angle. How is insta-dying without any possibility of escaping or retaliating fun? It's not.

I love how everyone's first line of defense is "obviously you must suck at the game" if you have any complaints about anything.

No, no, no... NO, you morons. If any assumptions should be made... I'd wager that the average level of gaming talent on an old school gaming website such as this is considerably higher than your average internet forum. Sometimes the game just sucks.

It says right in the cloak's description that it's still plenty visible to the naked eye, and it's not lying. That thing is for getting away from and/or on top of Titans. Only depressingly unobservant players will miss somebody near them who is cloaked.

The smart pistol, meanwhile, is almost strictly for farming mooks. It takes about ten years to line up a lethal attack on a pilot. You only have time to do that if the other guy is unaware of you, a terrible shot, or standing still. To use the smart pistol against other players, you either have to be sneaky as hell and very good with the parkour, or in a server full of morons.

Haha what a fucking dumb comment, not going to even bother with this brand boy nonsense.

That is essentially all the AI was meant to be. Think of Titanfall as an FPS MOBA-lite.

You have to play Hardpoint to actually realize this though. When you play Hardpoint, they can capture the points (Just as a moba mob can attack/destroy a tower) so there is reason to actually kill a squad of them headed to one of your points. As well as the fact that killing them takes time off of your Titanfall timer (equivalent to getting gold in DOTA/LoL to get better gear)

I get what they were shooting for as my initial comment about the MOBA part says, I just didn't care for the implementation. If the beta had been longer I would have had more time to check things out and re-evaluate based on your comments but they already closed it so *shrug*. I will buy this at some point down the line when its cheaper, I've already got a few MP games going anyway. I actually enjoyed the more traditional aspects of the game more than the Titans.

Player count wasn't an issue for me but I only saw the few beta maps.
