Ships Ahoy - Banished

Shining Rock Software now offers Banished, offering a note saying they have no preference whether people buy the city building game from gog.com, the Humble Store, Steam, or from their website. Here's a gameplay trailer, and here's the description of the game:
Welcome to the world of Banished! In this city-building strategy game, you control a group of exiled travelers who decide to restart their lives in a new land. They have only the clothes on their backs and a cart filled with supplies from their homeland.

The objective of the game is to keep the population alive and grow it into a successful culture. Options for feeding the people include hunting and gathering, agriculture, trade, and fishing. However, sustainable practices must be considered to survive in the long term.

Actually I've been pondering whether to jump on this or not. Total Biscuit did an interesting review on it. Says it's a mixed bag. Some of it really good, some of it not so much. And it's more of a survival simulator than a civ builder. I've seen a lot of similar mixed reviews on it. So without a demo Ima hold off. $20 is too much to gamble on an unknown with so many mixed reviews. I think I'll like it, but best to wait.

Yea, added it to my ever growing "wishlist" but figure Summer Sale is right around the corner....

I did not see the TB video on this but I've been watching lets plays on youtube and the game looks like fun.
There's not a lot of competition on the market for a game like this.
I agree $20 is a bit too much to gamble but pretty much all the lets play videos mention that this game is well worth the $20 with the amount of content you are getting.

Apparently this has been the top seller on Steam since its release, even beating out DayZ and Rust. No clue how that happened, given the complete lack of hype or marketing and the fact that this appears to be a rather mundane and generic city builder.

RPS gave it a interesting review. I'm not sure if the few days played that the review was based off of was enough though. I'll wait to see how long term play evolves.
The comments to that review make it sound like a lot of the complaints stem from ignorance.

I picked up 2 copies for myself and the missus. I like buying through the humble store as I can use bitcoins, which I'm having trouble getting rid of.

The game itself is pretty decent, though there are a couple of weird bits. Like planting a crop although you don't have any seeds initially, but you can still plant 1-2 things. Same with orchards.
Right off the bat the food consumption seems pretty high, I figured you need to get fishing and hunting up and going straight away with at least 2 people working each.

Graphics wise it's a little low on detail/polys but I think once you get a metropolis built the slightly lower quality will be a bonus with keeping fps up.

From what I've played so far, I'd give it a 7/10 and well worth my $20.

It wouldn't be safe for them to say where they make more or less money. Or they wouldn't likely get distribution from Steam and other services in the future.

that and it makes me feel a little less evil for having bought Simcity 2013 last year.

I easily deserve 20 dollars so buy me a copy.

Just watched some "lets play" on youtube and this game looks pretty awesome.
Now to find time to play it is going to be a hard one.
We need to implement 2 day work weeks with 5 days off, as opposed to the current 5 days works with 2 days off, cuz this is just bullshit!

It looks nice, but is that all you can build? Simple houses and such? It seemed they only had like four or five different things to build.

The snow effects are very cool, though.

You can build quite a few things, actually, but the focus of the game is not in building a huge village but rather a balanced village that can survive famine and winter and cold and plague and a lot of nasty stuff. It's SimCity3 if it was focused solely on the survival of the city.

Personally, I'm loving the game. It has some Dwarf Fortress levels of complexity in the interactions happening in the game. I believe this game will make my top 5 games of 2014 easily.

I know what you mean, time suckers like RPGs and RTS games are even harder to find the time to play...

Titanfall Beta was a pleasant surprise

I played around with this a little bit, and while it is a nice game there are some really bad design flaws in this game. Like removing something that you decide to not build after you have placed it. It would be nice if the Del key would remove the plotted item. Also placing buildings on the ground.

You would think that the area would clear out so you can see exactly what you have placed in a plot of trees. It makes it pretty hard to see or tell what you have placed there without having to click on the plot. I would have preferred seeing an outlined frame of the building I placed there. I get what he’s going for, but I just think some things could have been a little better in his implementation.
