Space Pirates and Zombies 2 Announced

The Minmax Games website reveals that development is underway on Space Pirates and Zombies 2, saying the sequel has been in development "under a shroud of darkness for 16 months" (thanks PC Gamer). They celebrate the news with a two minute announcement trailer which includes "pre-alpha" footage. Here's the announcement:
SPAZ 2 is about survival, salvage, and ship construction. Explore a living galaxy, claim territory, fight to protect it, and create your perfect mothership on the fly using parts salvaged from enemy wrecks.

Two hundred persistent Captains that are able to do everything the player can, including forming dynamic factions, building structures, controlling territory, and going to War.

A true living galaxy that is not player centric. It will develop differently each game through the interactions of the agents.

Time based galactic story events that happen whether the player is ready or not. These events add new threats and tools to deal with them. The Galaxy will need to find a new natural equilibrium each time a new disaster is unleashed.

Randomly generated modular parts. Build the mothership that suits your play style, on the fly, in seconds. Every part has its own unique stats that contribute to the mothership. Every part has its own hull integrity and damage states. Every part is a real, working, ship component.

Strategic ship building. The mass, location and shape of parts all matter. If a part blocks a turret, it will not fire. If a ship is too long, it will turn slowly. Too many engines will mean too little power for weapons. Every design choice counts.

A fully physics based 3d environment where everything is destructible, takes damage from impacts, can be grabbed and even thrown at enemies with the tractor beam.

Natural movement and controls. Movement is on a 2d plane and screen relative, much like an FPS. The combat feels like huge pirate ships battling on an ocean. Focus on tactical positioning and manage system power to unleash hell at the right moment.

Epic ship to ship battles. Tear the enemy apart piece by piece over minutes, instead of seconds.

Multiplayer arena modes using persistent profile based part inventories.

Local split screen coop.

Looks very cool! I like the 3rd person / broadside view for larger ships a lot!

I liked the first game a lot but every time I played I felt like the difficulty ramped up too fast and I'd hit a point where it wasn't fun anymore and I felt the need to spend way too long grinding to get better. Hopefully that won't happen this time around.

In a game like this I feel like the game should occasionally drop buffs on you if you're not progressing. "I see you've haven't ranked up in a while, here is a promotion." Or something like that, maybe have random encounters that are very generous, big fat xp boosts with little difficulty involved. If you're progressing and having no problems you don't ever hit these but if you're like me and keep getting in trouble the game will give you a little nudge.

I'm looking at you DARK SOULS! I don't expect to be given credit for beating the game "as intended" or whatever but I despise games that I stop playing because they stopped being fun because of difficulty. Even if you have to turn on god mode for me to progress and you don't save ANY progress, it's all a one sitting thing, that would be fine.

Sometimes i just want to see all the content in the game and I don't care about the mechanics / difficulty, just let me move one and see it.
