In a normal year I wouldn't balk at the price increase for Amazon Prime because I love it but couple a substantial increase with the fact that this year I started paying sales tax for Amazon purchases (I live in TN) and suddenly Amazon starts becoming significantly less appealing. Hopefully the increase will only be in the $10-$15 range.

Still you'll pay taxes, spend the time and gas driving, and about 10% to 50% more for many things locally. Very few items are cheaper unless you go to walmart, auctions, or flea markets -- we do almost all our shopping at these places, but also occasionally get good deals on eBay, Craigslist or sites like woot slickdeals etc. There's a few local places I support, a hardware store, butcher, couple others - good people with good business sense.

It's not about what you can afford, it's about what you can save so you can afford the things you don't need while still maintaining funds for a future... : )

Amazon prime, yeah I do stupid shit just because I can with it. They are trying to destroy everything in it's way retail which I don't want. So I have them lose money on me. I have my reasons why.

Zynga Brilliance:
""We don't take these decisions lightly but we believe these actions will allow us to create a clearer, faster path to win," said Mattrick."

Then why ever hire them in the first place if you can do more faster with less? Comments people make. You just can never get any truths from companies, always on the complete defensive.

I love Prime. I abuse the hell out of it, and I also don't use it for streaming. But the free shipping... Just ordered a couple things? Free shipping. Realized you needed something else two minutes later? Free shipping. Too lazy to run the store for Pop Tarts? Add $3.99 for next day delivery and you will have them tomorrow. It's often cheaper just to have Amazon send me something from clear across the country than for me to get in my car and go buy it locally.

I have no problem with Amazon raising the subscription fee. It's still more than worth it to me.

Now if only they'd add food and streaming to Amazon Prime for Canada... I could see myself doing the same, especially since the UPS dropoff is around the corner from where I work.

Sounds to me like you're a prime example of why they're raising the fee.

As I said, I abuse the hell out of it. However, the reasons they give for the hikes are increased shipping and fuel costs.

Never know! There's the slight possibility it may have just a leeetle bit to do with us ordering a $5 bag of beef jerky and have it sent within 2 days!

There's plenty of people who would balk at the fee raise, yet waste thousands of dollars on their chosen luxuries like smoking, going out to eat, cable TV, or other things I've given up over the years.

I can afford to pick them back up these days, but man no thanks - I'll just stick with stuff like Prime : )

Hopefully they start offering a monthly subscription with that. My year just ran out and I haven't had $80 spare lying around to buy the next year, been debating it though. But $120? I don't ship $10 worth a stuff a month honestly.

Prime is a luxury. It's one of those luxuries you get used to and don't want to live without.

I'm fine with them raising the price -- it's well worth it and a luxury I'll keep.

Oh and ya IE sure is doing well. /laf

Ugh. I love prime, but...$80 a year is pushing it, as is...

Maybe if I used more of their streaming, I could justify it, but I generally use netflix for that.

I could do $99.99 no problem - heck, I could have sworn that's what it was when I signed up.

$119.99? Eh. I get most of my items within 2 days regardless, I'm usually over $25 (I guess $35 now, which is a bit less common), and I don't do as much streaming as I should. I can throw $100 away to convenience, but feel less good about throwing $120 away for it.

I use a lot of their streaming and I have a Kindle, as well as ordering quite a few items a year. However, I'll drop Prime and spend my money elsewhere if it goes up by $20 - $40. Prime is convenient, but hardly a necessity.
