Ships Ahoy - Might & Magic X Legacy

The Might & Magic X Legacy website announces the official launch of Might & Magic X Legacy, which is now available on Steam as a Standard or Deluxe Edition, though the RPG sequel is also available on GameStop PC Downloads, and probably other digital distributors as well. Here's the launch trailer, and here's word:
Might & Magic X - Legacy is an authentic solo experience in the classic first-person RPG genre, with a turn-based gameplay system. By creating and leading a group of adventurers in and around the exciting city of Karthal, and by battling powerful mythical creatures while collecting ancient magical treasures, players will determine the fate of the Agyn Peninsula.

I love this game. I played twice through the Early Access. They did their homework and now performance is top notch on my Haswell ultrabook. Can't really say why I like it that much. Story is bla, graphics are serviceable but I can't stop playing. For me, this is really retro done right.

As someone who is a big fan of World of Xeen, the pre-release version of the game was a huge disappointment. As a result, I didn't spend more than a couple of hours with the game, but the first few hours were enough to turn me off.

There were quite a few like you. Playing the release though, so far they have polished this up really well. This baby is slick. The only thing I would ask for is the ability to add more power bars, if only one more. I'm not a fan of opening a spell-book if the spell can't fit on my 10 slot power bar. But performance, move speed, loot qty and uniqueness, day/night cycle, map, quest tracking and other things are now finished. Many of us were concerned about the release being early... they were holding back some.

+They kept the csv files in which we can change a lot of gameplay mechanics easily. Like... I dropped the cost of mana for all spells noticeably along with a little drop in power. I want my magic users to be able to hurl early and often. But tons of #'s tweaking you can do there.

I'm absolutely swimming in good games atm.

Since there are always complaints about any DRM that isn't Steam... I'll explain my UPlay experience just now...

I had previously purchased this during early access, but removed it to wait for the final copy... Noticed it was final today, and installed it on steam... Ran it, played for an hour or two, and quit the game... This is the point I noticed UPlay, and what did it have? A popup asking if I want to quit UPlay, which I clicked...

Damned intrusive DRM... : )

Thanks for that mini-review Axis. I loved World of Xeen so much, but still enjoyed 6 & 7, so I was curious to see how this would turn out. Too bad uPlay is intertwined with the Steam version.

Axis - what are you liking about it? What about some of the reports of slow performance and at least a few quest breaking bugs?

Well first off the feel is terrific, nostalgic feel like you are playing the original series with all the streamline you'd expect and just enough bells and whistles to make it interesting but not over the top bling-full like so many games these days. A real breath of fresh air.

I have an extremely powerful PC and am not noticing any performance problems on max running at 144fps solid (awesome monitor ftw) -- so I'm not the best person to ask. However the beta did occasionally stagger here and there for no apparent reason on my rig, so obvious improvements have been made.

I haven't seen any bugs yet. If something pops up and screws my current party over I won't sweat it as I'm going slow and reading forums as I've done this dance before. Multiple saves usually win, and I keep checking the forums for any gotchas. I also know it's going to be modded to death, so I'm not concerned.

I admit much of my enjoyment is purely cause I loved the originals (the early ones, xeen etc) so much, and M&M Legacy nails that original feel very closely.

Honeymoon period certainly, but I don't praise unless I know it'll hold my attention for awhile.
Yours truly,

Axis

Having completed several of the old M&M games in the 90s, I can safely say this game has been long in coming.

I'm totally digging it.

I hated the move away from Erathia/Enroth of M&M VI/VII/VIII, but I'd be willing to give it a try.

I loved the old M&M games and would gladly pay $25, but it sounds like it needs a patch or two, so I will wait.

Well, unless it's a complete broken game, I'll be buying it at some point. Judging by the videos, it's similar to other M&M games, which I enjoyed a lot. No reviews yet, but only $24.99 currently.

Although it does have uPlay, which I swore off. Not sure why these companies feel they need 2-3 levels of DRM built into their games.
