2013's Top Free-to-Play Games

SuperData Research offers their accounting of the worldwide top 10 grossing free-to-play games for all of 2013 (thanks GameSpot). Perhaps surprisingly, the top earner on their list came pretty close to $1 billion in revenue. Here's what they report:

  1. Crossfire, $957 million
  2. League of Legends, $624 million
  3. Dungeon Fighter Online $426 million
  4. World of Tanks, $372 million
  5. Maplestory, $326 million
  6. Lineage I, $257 million
  7. World of Warcraft, $213 million
  8. Star Wars: The Old Republic, $139 million
  9. Team Fortress 2, $139 million
  10. Counter-Strike Online, $121 million

No wonder so many games are going this way

I haven't even heard of #1. Is it big in Asia or have I been under a rock?

Crossfire took over where Counter Strike failed.

I had to google it. Apparently it's a korean counterstrike clone that also got released in China by Tencent. So that's where all the money rolls in from, I would assume.

Yeah I guess I was under the same rock, never heard of No1. Suprised that TF2 is that low on the list, but then again its been around for ages...

O....M...G! I had no idea these free to play games generated so much money. I mean look at Team Fortress lets say it cost maybe 15 million to make, over the years it's probably generated half a BILLION in weapons, gadgets, & stupid hats. If I was a game publisher, why would I make a single stand alone title like "Watch Dogs" that probably cost 100 million to make when I can have a long term revenue stream like a free to play MMO....Crazy

Because it's hard to crack into that list of games (But Funcom will keep trying! lol). I see Star Wars MMO will actually be profitable, it wasn't a failure.

And that is the reason, why big budget AAA gaming will slowly wither away. SP games generate good money if you can keep a tight budget. Good for indies like CD Project or small publishers. But if you are a big publisher, you CANNOT afford to make this expensive SP games any longer. And not because you cannot make money anymore with this product, but because your investor DEMANDS that you switch to F2P because there is a chance to make MORE money!

Am I a racist evil son of a bitch if I go to the home page for crossfire and understand why it makes so much money simply by looking at the faces of the people who liked it on Facebook.

Yeah that's BS. Is there anything to actually buy in WoW, or are they just counting its subscription fees, in which case err... FREE to play?

My guess would be the information is taken from the Blizzard store and the sales of all the over-priced, in-game merchandise. Given how expensive the average item is, it likely has a lot less payees than those who use a more modest and legit ftp system.

some interesting names to be sure. WoW is technically NOT a free to play game, it has an unlimited trial up to level 20. AFAIK you still need a boxed copy + subscription to go beyond that.

Star wars is interesting, I guess its title is still a big draw in itself and the f2p aspect helps, and most people will tell you that the XP hit in the f2p model is so bad it really drives you to subscribe. Apparently it is a working model.

Was hoping to see if there were more names on the list but their website is down.

Figured LOL, as others I haven't heard of Crossfire, looks like every other multiplayer FPS. Other countries that aren't melting pots, they seem to embrace in mass singular games, so in their world there can be one. Like minds, I suppose.

I always chuckle that LOL defenders say it's not PTW, it is just skins. So people are spending crazy $$$'s on just a new look and not real functionality? Ah no. My guess is when you get your ass handed to you, you try different tactics and then different characters to see if you can overcome deficiencies. But they are different, it's not just looks.

You don't have to pay for new characters. You can buy them using the in-game currency which you get every time you play a match. And if you play LoL on a regular basis, you'll always have enough in-game currency to buy new characters.

The only part of LoL that could qualify as P2W are the XP boosters. Your runes, masteries and summoner spells are all locked behind levels so a level 1 player has an inherent disadvantage against a level 30 player (though the matchmaking would never put them in the same match). You also have to pay for more rune pages, which is stupid.

Crossfire? Why have I never heard of this...googling...confused...wtf? It looks like counterstrike only...a little worse. How does that make almost a billion dollars and the closest competitors makes in the neighborhood of half that?

Nice to see world of tanks is still doing so well, going to need that money to write off that awful World of Planes disaster. Maybe world of Warships will be better by my money is on WarThunder.

It's surprising to see SWTOR in there with 139 million. I am shocked that game is still doing so well. (as someone who bought at played it from launch +2 months)

See as Crossfire ranks so high, I'm going with them looking at this on an international level and if I remember correctly, WoW is Free-To-Play in China and a few other regions so that might be their justification for being included in this list.

Yeah. These aren't published numbers. They probably just took reported account numbers, cost of items in the online store and ran some math to say how much each account might of spent in 2013 based on some distribution of whales, minnows and free loaders. That might be a rough ballpark figure, but I wouldn't be surprised if they are wildly off. Without seeing an actual breakdown of their methodology, it is all suspect.

I see MWO is not listed. I'm curious what numbers they have. Maybe they only compiled revenue when they went out of beta, even if (lots of) money was coming in while in beta.
