Out of the Blue

I have a Blu-ray drive in my PC, but need a codec to play Blu-ray discs. It seems odd to me that searching for this results in a page full of sketchy results, and little or nothing that's legitimate. I guess I'll just be the sucker that pays for this, even if I have to search far-and-wide to do so, as I am not eager to potentially hose my machine as part of this project.

Bluray on PC is annoying to deal with, I've always just made my own rips and stored them locally.

I have little to no faith they'll select a story arc for the next Star Wars films which I'll like or appreciate.

Side note: You know what the most disappointing part of finding out Vader was Luke's father? It meant Vader wasn't hundreds of years old, like Yoda. Which I had been assuming...

What have you been smoking? Good Trek was amazing stuff. Star Wars has always been nothing but schlock.

You use slysoft's AnyDVD HD to decode the disc in the drive (it can do it on the fly so no need to even copy it to your HD) http://www.slysoft.com/en/download.html It has a trial so you can download it and try it out for 21 days.

Then use VLC Player http://www.videolan.org/ to play the disc that is in the drive.

AnyDVD HD takes care of the encrypted data (ie it decodes the encrypted AACS data) and lets the player play the disc as if it had no encryption. Simple to use and IMHO the best and most flexible solution for DVD/BluRay Playback on a home built PC.

You could go with something like a dedicated BluRay player software you buy but it is less flexible and puts lots of useless crap on your system like extra DRM modules.

Lol thanks. That's a bad name for an app. Sounds like Any ol' piece of software instead of a proper title.

Doesn't that seem like a lot of work as opposed to a program for the player itself where you just pop it in and watch?

Anyway, I think the thing is the ability for the producers/director to respect the film canon. Not just toss it because the director wants to add something cool (AHEM! *cough* Star Trek Into Darkness *cough*) Abrams is known for not having the best time with intricate story telling. He's not Michael Bay-bad or Uwe Boll-bad (thank Christ) but he takes major liberties. I don't have a lot of confidence in his ability to direct this trilogy. I really don't. He's a great guy and I like him as a person and geek, but as a director of sacred sci-fi geek properties - ~~ aeh...no. He's gonna fuck it up. I know it. I'll be genuinely surprised if he manages to avoid the huge minefield he's steaming into and comes out with a great film. The first Star Trek was ok. I liked it. But it wasn't like the originals, it was too much shaky cam, lens flares and running around. Take a look at the original Star Trek 2, what are they doing the most? Sitting and waiting or talking. But that's a good thing. It created atmosphere. Abrams movies are nothing but running from one set piece to the next at full speed. You never get a breath in...well, one that means anything, anyway. And now that they've boxed themselves into a short time to produce the thing and don't have a solid script yet...yikes...that's NEVER a good sign...it means there's no solid vision for the film and it's going to suffer for it...

Alternatively, use MakeMKV to just rip a copy straight to your drive and watch it from there. last I checked MakeMKV was still free as it was still in beta, though they make you upgrade versions every month.

The Thrawn Trilogy would be pure gold in film, if done right. It pretty much has all the epicness of the original trilogy in an expanded 3 book trilogy format.

People say this a lot, but I think they'd make kind of terrible movies. Things that work in movies don't necessarily make for great books, and vice versa. I'm looking at Heir to the Empire's plot summary on Wikipedia (it's been a long time since I read this) and don't really think this makes for great cinema. The climax is when the good guys activate the mole miners and the Empire just goes "Oh, well" and leaves.

You look at the Star Wars films, and you can break down each movie into segments like "rescue the princess", "Hoth battle", or "Endor battle", that keep things moving along - they're short, focused and reasonably exciting. But in the books there's a lot more going on, a lot of it's pretty talky, and a lot of the resolution isn't all that thrilling. Again, fine books but not necessarily good on the big screen.

Depends though on what ya want out of it I guess - it would take an exceptional Director and screen writer to establish it in film format (here is the full book info http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Thrawn_Trilogy ). Personally I don't think it could be done, and it won't be, but its fun to think about. I get what you are saying though, the original trilogy has a clear focus beginning, middle, and end.

My Summation:

Heir To The Empire (Beginning) (intro rolls in 5 years after Return of The Jedi) - Mostly sets the tone that this series is about redemption from evil (Mara Jade) and the protection of Leia and her unborn children, with the usual SW action sprinkled in (Dark Jedi Clone/Imperial Remnant Striking Back). The ending is a win for New Republic.

Dark Force Rising (Middle) - Smuggler (Talon Karrde - the new 'han solo' does what he wants guy) is now fleeing the Imperial Remnant for his actions during the previous book (much like Han Solo in Empire Strikes Back). Backstory involves Leia becoming a stronger character no longer the "princess that needs to be rescued." This book is a win for the Empire during later events of the battles that take place.

The Last Command (End) - The New Republic is reeling from its loss during the Battle for Katana Fleet. The New Republic launches one last ditch offense to attack the stronghold of Admiral Thrawn's facility with a small force led by Skywalker. Coruscant is under siege by the Empire. The final battle with the Dark Jedi C'baoth takes place. Mara Jade is redeemed when she saves Skywalker. Admiral Thrawn is killed, and the Imperial Remnant order a retreat, the New Republic has won. The series ends with Skywalker giving former Dark Jedi Mara Jade his father's lightsaber.

I for one cant see the new Star Wars films as turning out as anything other than pure shit. Even if Lindeloff doesnt get withing 20 miles of the script we are missing the one important player who is simply the pivotal turning point of the first three films, erm the first six films that is. Without Darth Vader, Star Wars loses like 90% of its charm.

Not just Darth Vader, the Empire and everything with it. I think they'll try too hard to play service to the original trilogy with poorly done "where are they now" placements of the way too old actors. Nobody wants to see old Han or *gasp* Leia.

The Thrawn trilogy was great when it was released. Tight oversight from Lucasfilm and a good writer made it worth the read, but the end was slightly anti-climactic. Everything since has pretty much been shit unless you are a die-hard fan. The prequels were mostly shit. If they could have cut out Anakin and Jar Jar and, well, any tie to the old movies and just had Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan, and Maul? That would have been good. Lucas's desire to flash all sorts of fan winks with strange connections just ruined it. Darth vader built C3PO on Tattooine? Chewie knew Yoda, Boba Fett's dad was the Storm Trooper clone model? Holy hack writing, Batman!

Sadly, Lucas is the king of Retcon. If you read his original novelizations of the trilogy and watch early interviews the background was NOT what was shown in ep 1-3. Face it, the guy who once said it was all about the story and the special effects were nothing without a good story went and forgot he even said that and made a movie entirely about the effects and merchandising.

The Mouse House can't do worse, but I have doubts they can do better. This coming from a guy who hated Star Trek until JJ got a hold of it and loved the original Wars trilogy.
