SimCity Offline Mode Coming

The SimCity Blog announces the online-only requirement is being removed from the Windows edition of SimCity as of the upcoming Update 10, which adds a single-player mode to the urban-planning game. Here's word from Patrick Buechner, General Manager of the EA's Maxis Emeryville studio:
Let’s get right to it.

SIMCITY OFFLINE IS COMING!

I’ve wanted to say those words for quite some time, so my apologies that I didn’t take the time to say Happy New Year first.

Yes, Offline is coming as a free download with Update 10 to all SimCity players. When we launch it, all of your previously downloaded content will be available to you anytime, anywhere, without the need for an internet connection. We are in the late phases of wrapping up its development and while we want to get it into your hands as soon as possible, our priority is to make sure that it’s as polished as possible before we release it. So, until then… testing, testing and more testing. As one of the final steps, we’re putting Offline into the hands of some of our most hardcore players, the DevTesters. This group of volunteers is going to put Offline through its paces before we release it.

In Update 10, you can still play solo in Regions on your own, or in Multiplayer with people from around the world. What’s new is the Single Player Mode, which allows you to play the game Offline by yourself. And because your saved games in this mode are stored locally, you can save and load to your heart’s content. Our team will be delivering a follow-up blog that will outline the full details in the near future so stay tuned.

So what does this mean for the Online game? All of the benefits of being connected will remain including access to Multiplayer, the Global Market and Leaderboards. And all of your pre-existing saved cities and regions will still be accessible should you log-in to the Online game.

Bringing the game Offline means big things for our wonderful community of Modders. They can now make modifications to the game and its components without compromising the integrity of the Online game. Modding is a big part of our studio’s legacy and we’re excited to see what you guys create. Check out this thread to learn about Oppie85’s Central Train Station, which you can put into your game right now, and if you’re interested in making your own content take a look at the Modding Policy. To get you started, we will be rolling out a series of tutorials from the studio that surfaces how we’ve created some of the content that you’ve seen so far in hopes of inspiring your creativity.

So that’s it from me for the time being. Keep an eye out for more information on Offline shortly. We’ll be releasing more information on how it all works. And as always, get in touch with me on Twitter @EAGamer, I’m always eager to read your feedback.

From me, and everyone at the studio, thank you again for staying with us. We look forward to getting Offline for SimCity into your hands as soon as possible.

They can call me when the building space for an entire city isn't the size of a postage stamp.

I'm sure modders will fix that if Maxis doesn't.

What a clusterfuck EA made of this game. Offline mode is a good start but doesn't really fix the game being designed around smaller city sizes due to underpinning online functionality where none was necessary.

Yes, put in offline mode once no one is buying the game anymore. Dipshits.

Im pretty sure that the real reasons why the city sizes was as small as it was were threefold. As you said the underpining online functionality is definitely one of them but more importantly the total clusterfuck of the actual so-called simulation that runs undearneath the 'purty' would become much more readily apparent in a bigger city. Thirdly, dont underestimate the draw of the mighty $$$. Why invest time and money into making a quality game when you can invest less in marketing and end up making the same profit??? Corporate Busines Practice 101...
I have a nifty blue line!

I love in that blogpost how they italicised "Offline," like it's some original concept they thought of. Also how they don't mention how the players badly wanted it (although that's certainly implied).

I suspect what happened was when they saw the expansion was selling nothing like they hoped, because lots of folk bought into the hype of the original and got burnt on the always-on requirement. So, EA figured they had to patch in Offline Mode to make the expansion palatable and shift some more units.

i am playing the "offline" console version of diablo 3 and its great.

Perhaps 2013 will be remembered as the year that the publishers (hopefully?) figured out that every game franchise cannot be massaged into "Pay to play" format.

Impossibru! How will my computer be able to handle all the complex computations? I thought the job had to be offloaded to some EA server farm since my computer cannot possibly handle the workload.

It's something. It's more than I expected, as was the free game, but I doubt modders can do much about the fundamentally flawed simulation system. If it can only handle about 20,000 actual sims before falling apart then larger map sizes aren't going to be much use.

Congratulations guys, now no one can say SimCity literally couldn't be worse.

Yep. Two of the biggest franchises got baptized over it, should be a solid message. UBI as well has backed off always online. For them what is probably proving is even with reduced piracy, having always online resulted in less sales. So even with offline + more piracy that way still sells more copies. Aka bottom line.

Isn't it just possible that making a game "online-only" for the first 6-9 months is a way to ensure the traditional pirating methods will not work, forcing more people to buy the game; then later patching in offline play?

But think of the "power of the cloud"...

I guess EA figures they got most of their sales already, so threw in offline to make a few more dollars off people.

2013 was the year of ruined franchises and some of the biggest disappointments I can recall in almost 2 decades. Aliens, Total War, Sim City, Lucas Arts finally dying, it was all a mess. Watching EA still trying to squeeze blood out of this thing is an embarrassment.
