SOE Going Forward With Unified Subscriptions

The Planetside subreddit has word from Sony Online Entertainment that they are going forward with the recently proposed plan to offer a unified subscription plan for all their MMOGs, which will cost $14.99 per month (thanks The Escapist). Here's word from SOE's John Smedly:
Hi everyone,
Thanks for the feedback. We listened.
Here are the basics of our revised plan. Please note - we have not had the time to do estimates of the work involved, and also we're continuing to listen. so this isn't baked just yet. Do not expect that this is all going to happen immediately. We plain don't know yet. we're doing that meeting tmw.
1) We're lowering the price of All Access to $14.99
2) We're going to make it so every subscriber to all our PC games an all access member. Basically there will be one SOE membership for our PC games. Please note there are some minor restrictions around our kids titles (simply put - if you're a 12 year old who signed up for FR you won't have access to the adult games so we'll likely leave the lower priced kids offerings as separate subscriptions for under 12 for the same low prices).
3) We're keeping the 500 SC included with the subscription instead of going to the "pick an item" system. We heard you. You didn't like the change. The only change we are making is that we're now going to make you claim it monthly. You can still hoard it though :) I realize this is a bit of a pain but honestly it's the best compromise we could come up with that solves the problems I mentioned in the other thread.
4) we are going to be giving our members a 10% discount in our marketplaces.
5) European players - we have an idea on how to include you in this but we need to discuss with our partners. We have a pretty good idea on this though. give us a bit of time to suss this out.
6) Nothing is changing with Player Studio items - you'll still be able to buy them with your 500SC.
7) Console titles - you'll notice I only mentioned the PC titles. Our goal is to include the PS3 and PS4 games that we have, but I want to be up front and say that isn't a done deal.
In a nutshell that's where our head is at.
As always your feedback is welcomed. Please do us a big favor and carefully think about #3. Our goal is to give you more value in the subscription to make it more attractive and making it simpler in the process.
I really feel like we're making a good decision going this route. It makes things simpler and gives more value to our players.
Thanks
Smed

If there were multiple SOE MMOs I wanted to play this would be great. But considering I've never played any of them, the value is of this is of little concern to me.

With as many games most people have in their libraries, most unfinished and a lot un-played, I just don't see the logic is shelling out $14.99/MONTH to play a game(s). /shrug

It's not to play "A" game, it's to play ANY of their games.

Let's say Sony hadn't annihilated Star Wars Galaxies and it was still an ongoing, fairly unique MMO. Let's say you play that still. Now, let's say you also want to play some EverQuest. Now, let's say there's an upcoming subscription-based MMO that you're really interested in.

In the past, that'd be 3 subscriptions.

Now it's one.

Because c'mon, you're not playing them at the same time...

*THAT* is the value. *IF* you're interested in multiple subscription-based Sony MMOs then it's a great deal.

... but I'm still burnt from SWG... I miss my dancing wookies!

Makes sense, thanks for clarifications. Definitely cost effective IF that is what you're interested in. Obviously not for everyone; not me as you could tell already.

Cheers

Ah, so instead of a kneejerk station cash change, they actually went and thought things through after the outcry and are doing what they should have done in the first place?

Anyone know what their reasoning is/was for requiring monthly claims? I couldn't see a good reason for it on the original proposal, and they're not clarifying it here (nor did they include a link to that other thread).

The "other thread", I believe, is here. There's a lot of enlightening information there, but you might have to dig for it.

The gist of it, as I understand it, is that Station Cash in general is a financial liability. You can buy $10 worth of SC, but SOE can't actually count that $10 until the SC is used to purchase something. Until the SC is spent, the transaction sits on their books as a liability, making quite a mess of things. Allowing "idle" accounts to accumulate SC makes things even uglier.

I think this stems from the little-understood notion that SOE isn't selling the SC itself; they're selling the items that you purchase with that SC. The SC is just an intermediate storage of value, like store credit or gift cards, that doesn't actually count for anything until you buy something with it.

Thanks for the link, I'll go spend a bit of time reading it. I rather suspected it was an accountant's problem, not a real issue that lead to this rule. The fact is, they have been paid, and they're apparently concerned that one form of virtual goods (SC or any form of credits) is bad for them, while another form (virtual items in a game) is good. And people think we gamers have problems with reality...

Many of the problems in our society can be traced back to the games accountants play to hide the facts.

Not really much to complain about here, most SOE titles are F2P with sub options and the parcel of games you get to play for 15 bucks a month is extensive.

Don't need to sub if you don't want to, but if you do, you get enhanced benefits in a bunch of titles. Seems smart for them and good for the customer.

This is a great deal. I'll likely sub to this.

This will probably heist a few more subs from WoW. Folks are chipping away at them.

Planetside 2 feels better than ever these days. With the terrain/base enhancements across Indar and Esamir (still working on Amerish) and the recent performance update, the game is fantastic and easy to reccomend.
