Alien: Isolation Announced

The SEGA Blog announces Alien: Isolation, Creative Assembly's upcoming Aliens action/adventure/shooter. "In Alien: Isolation, we have taken the series back to the roots of Ridley Scott’s 1979 movie, the original survival horror," said Alistair Hope of Creative Assembly. "Our Alien is a truly terrifying creature, as intelligent as he is hostile, relentless, brutal and unstoppable. This is the Alien game fans of the series have always wanted." This has been a poorly kept secret before this revelation, as it was outed by the discovery of its trademark, concept art, and screenshots. The description on Xbox.com confirms the game's protagonist will be Ellen Ripley's daughter, and Videogamer has some first-hand impressions, saying "It's Amnesia in space, essentially, with Ripley stalked by a lone Xenomorph aboard the station," and there are also a hands-on previews on The Escapist and Rock, Paper, Shotgun. An Alien Isolation trailer is also now available, teasing the project with cinematics and glimpses of gameplay, a platform list that includes PC; Xbox One; PlayStation 4; Xbox 360; and PlayStation 3, and word the game will be "out late 2014." Here's the description:
Discover the true meaning of fear in Alien: Isolation, a survival horror set in an atmosphere of constant dread and mortal danger. Fifteen years after the events of Alien™, Ellen Ripley’s daughter, Amanda enters a desperate battle for survival, on a mission to unravel the truth behind her mother's disappearance. As Amanda, you will navigate through an increasingly volatile world as you find yourself confronted on all sides by a panicked, desperate population and an unpredictable, ruthless Alien. Underpowered and underprepared, you must scavenge resources, improvise solutions and use your wits, not just to succeed in your mission, but to simply stay alive.

I'm sure Isolation will have a fair amount of scripting. That doesn't mean it'll be 100% scripted, though. The developers were apparently inspired by Slender, which has minimal scripting.

And that means nothing when the developers of Alien Isolation are Creative Assembly.

Dev studios usually have multiple teams working on different projects. I seriously doubt that the Total War team is working on this.

BTW, PC Gamer has a good preview of Isolation: PC Gamer preview. Seems pretty promising.

I actually like Alien 3. Along with everyone else, when it came out I was disappointed. But I think that has more to everyone's expectations as Aliens was such a good movie (many hated it at the time too because it was nothing like Alien). I've watched it many times over the years, and I enjoy and appreciate it far more now, especially with the extra bits in the Directors Cut. Would have been interesting to see what David Fincher could have done without the meddling of Fox.

Would have also been interesting to see what Alien 4 could have been like if Joss Whedon had directed instead of Jean-Pierre Jeunet. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1kkNYNtQXo Joss Whedon on Alien 4. It's not playing for me, but hopefully it'll load for others. Basically, everything was done wrong and was nothing how he envisioned it when he wrote it.

I liked Alien 3 as well. I watched all 3 of those movies in my young days, good stuff. I think Alien 3 just kind of shattered that sense of "but the good person hero is supposed to live" stuff that movies do.

To me it seemed like the nightmare was finally over for Ripley, her entire life was haunted by Xenomorphs that followed her and finally got her too, just like her nightmares, but she made them die with her (or that 'line' of xenomorphs anyways). That whole movie was meant as an appeal to emotion, especially the death of the little girl and hicks. The first time I watched it the ending was definitely a complete surprise to me.

Alien 4 was a supreme mess though, still good affects and the newest "alien suits" were top notch. Joss Whedon is cool and all, but there was weird bits of humor that were out of place "weyland yutani, bought by wal-mart, because that happens in the future, lulz."

I have the whole (new) anthology on blu-ray. Definitely recommend it.

For me it's Alien and Aliens and then the series was done. Same with Terminator.

Besides, after Aliens more than half of all sci-fi movie pitches started out with "It's like Aliens, but..."

Just like Die Hard did with action films.

Unfortunately, most of those pitches should have ended with "...but it sucks."

It's like Die Hard, except it's on a boat, and the main character is a woman, and...IT SUCKS!

Well, OK, most of the Aliens ones are more like:

It's like Aliens, except it takes plac eon this other planet, and a ship, and it has these creatures, and these guys with guns...no, wait, you're right, it's pretty much Aliens...but it SUCKS!

Agreed. The first AvP game though was fucking excellent. Too bad that the movie was a PG13 cashgrab piece of shit...

Yup, the first game was awesome. The Dark Horse comics weren't too bad either. The movie ignored any and all source material and was horrible.

Unfortunately, this won't be as terrifying as the original Alien on the Commodore 64 and what I meant about that was every playthrough was random. You did not know who the android was, nor did you know where the Alien was; every playthrough was new and different.

That being said, if the developers do not have any scripts set up where Ellen reaches 'big turn of events a' and the alien doesn't show up but does on a different playthrough, great but I'm not getting my hopes up. It would be too much to ask the devs to make a game where the alien truly wanders the ship and only turns its attention on an area that Ellen passed through or makes noise around. I'm billing this as a limited combat-orientated "Tomb Raider in space."

People were literally saying the exact same thing to A:CM previews. Just replace Alien with Aliens.

Except there have been countless shooters based on Aliens (space marines mowing down hordes of Xenomorphs). There's never been a survival horror game based on the original film.

And for good reason. It's fun in small bursts like in the first few hours of AvP1 and especially AvP2. But in order for it to work everything has to be scripted.
Gearbox did promise early on A:CM would be a tactical survival horror type game. What did we get? Don't get too excited yet.

Anyway, it's impossible for this game to be scary after how over-used the monster has become. Alien was scary because it was rarely seen and there was nothing else like it at the time. After the pathetic Alien Resurrection, AvP, and AvP:R movies followed by the weak AvP3 and disastrous A:CM is there a monster in any media more run into the ground?

They are decades too late for a game like this. And remember it's still Sega of AvP3 and A:CM and Creative Assembly of Rome 2 behind it.

I'd actually argue that an unscripted survival horror game would be much scarier than a scripted one. Heavily scripted horror games are predictable and often become formulaic. They feel like haunted houses rather than horrific survival experiences. As for how scary a Xenomorph actually is, I don't think it really matters. If it can easily kill you and you can't kill it, that's enough to instill fear in the player. It could be Barney and it still wouldn't matter.

Worked for Miasmata, though that had a whole island to walk around on and orienteering to do etc. If they can implement some interesting survival and navigation mechanics it could be good. Imagine freely wandering the ship with the threat of the xenomorph stalking you the whole time.

But I'm worried it'll be more like Amnesia, a highly controlled horror show with scripted scares etc. That's how the Eurogamer preview made it look.

Ya actively had to look for and find PCs in the Base for info on how to proceed.

Back then we didn t need to be spoonfed this info. We searched for it. Guess times AND peeps have changed. ;p

Once you knew where all the cards were, and where the vents went, you could speedrun it in like 5 minutes.

I know, cause I found all the maps in an EGM or the like.
