Yea the game is VERY MUCH Terraria, until you jump on that ship. You need to mine coal not just for torches, steel, and other things, but coal is your fuel for your ship. Always keep enough on hand to GET BACK, as not all planets/moons have coal.
MrGrosser and I are pillaging the lands and returning to our HOME planet with goods from across the galaxy.
It is what I have been looking for after Terraria - the next step. With Terraria the only thing you could really do is create a new world with your current character, slaughter and strip the land, then go back to your main world and bring stuff with you. Starbound does that all with the same "game" and then some.
Not all resources are on your home planet (like Terraria), and instead of the demon traps you destroy in Terraria, you go to a different planet to find new ores in different biomes. You can then meld and mold these together to make greater items. But to do so you need to beat bosses to get processors and CPUs to upgrade your abilities.
It is all done very well. In about 15 hours we have destroyed 3 of 4 bosses and traveled to about 10 planets. We have acquired technolog for guns, turrets, andn greater armour. I have been to planets that house humans and robots and taken their technology back to my HOME planet.
If you enjoyed Terraria, you are going to love Starbound. 25 hours in (first reset was after 10 solid hours) so 15 on this new world personally, and MrGrosser has another 10 in it I am sure.

yeh - you had to do "world farming" to get the most out of terraria, but there was no in-game context for it.. you just had a persistent character no matter which world you loaded up
in starbound, there is context for this - you get in a spaceship and fly to other worlds to get more stuff.. and they are usually pretty different from each other, even when they are the same biome style because everything is procedurally generated to a good extent
but its also got various species for npc towns, dungeons, etc.. there is questing, random events, monster capture and training, and they eventually plan to add stuff like terraforming, space combat, a main storyline and other crazy shit
it pretty much crushes terraria.. so most likely will be around for a few years, getting probably frequent updates - and there is already a mod community with tons of work underway
possible classic in the making.. we'll see |

way better .. except the combat, terraria has tons more varied weapons so tons more styles of fighting
however starbound is very very early beta, and its missing most of planned features
ive decided to hold off for a few months so i dont get burned out on it before it gets more complete
one thing in particular is the graphics/art quality - its really well done, has the feel of an actual 16bit game from that era except with modern UI and effects.. not sure how they pulled that off but its very nice - unlike terraria which just looks goofy imo It is what Terraria should have been.
Take Terarria, make it Terraria+, add space ships to travel to more Terrarrias, and multiply that by 1,000.......
Check my screens on Steam.
And it is still in "beta" which I would describe more as Alpha - as there is a TON of content that isn't there that is supposed to be. World wipes and character wipes are common......my heart will be crushed when the next one happens..... |

I actually think that there is nothing pressing that I need to buy this year.
I just picked up a couple DLCs and that was about it.
Finally started Far Cry 3 too. got eaten by a tiger and got depressed and stopped playing for a bit.
I don't think the sale is bad...it's just that I can't find much that I haven't bought before. |

Yes, and get notified on a highly configurable basis things like "lowest ever price on items on my wishlist" or whatever. I have it set to email me once a day, which helps keep an eye on bundles and sales.
Jerykk wrote on Dec 23, 2013, 22:46: I'm just amazed that there are people out there who still don't own Skyrim.
Also, the community sales are really annoying. People always vote for games that have already had the exact same discount many times before. Even if I'm not interested in a particular game, I will vote for it if the discount is unprecedented. They will go on daily at same price. So just wait for it if its something you are interested in |

Maybe try re-reading what I said. I didn't say you were complaining. I said if you want it to change you need to complain...as in to the Publisher to get it changed for future sales. /facepalm
All you can do is complain. It worked to get the DLC discounted for Van Helsing...but I really doubt a company as big as Bethesda is going to care. Doh, my bad!
Edit:Yeah, my bet is they will wait till Legendary price drops enough to where they are equal prices.

There we go. Skyrim knocks DayZ off the top. Finally SOMETHING.
And the verdict is: this sale is the WORST. |

Well THQ was a big participant, and they are gone. So that's one less big publisher and their games missing from the mix. EA of course pushes Origin, and only stuff they have on Steam is old...and they have had sales this time around. BF2 was just on sale for like $2.50 as was Dragons Age complete for $7.50.
Ubisoft has had Farcry 3 at $7.50, along with other games of theirs on sale.
Activision rarely deeply discounts anything.
Still 10 days left in the sale. Lots of time for other stuff to get discounted.

It's the same scam as a lot of other companies have been doing lately. Massively discount the base game, leaving the DLC with a small discount, or none at all and hoping people that only buy the base game, or only have the base game already will turn around and drop $20 for Legendary or go for the DLC's Individually.

Maybe it's just my perception but it seems like the big third party publishers are participating in the Steam sales less and less as time goes on, presumably to push their own services or to sell DLC. I've picked up some good indie titles in this sale but almost nothing in terms of third party games that I wanted. I'm not disappointed or anything but I hope it isn't a continuing trend. |
