Count me as one of those that couldn't get into this. My first game I just ran, then ran, then ran, trying to find something and eventually finding a coast. I continued running until I found a guy hiding in a bush. He was near a town, so I ran into it. Zombies saw me, of course, but I needed something to do. I tried to drag them back to the guy in the bush but he was gone, so I ran back into the town, ran into one building, got bored, ran out tried to get into another building but its door wasn't real, ran and tried to get an ax I saw but it was just scenary, and got eaten.

Then I uninstalled. It wasn't for me. Too lifeless, too little to do. Slowly surviving isn't something I'm interested in. Just not my type of game. I'm not much into survival horror, and this is even slower and more "survival."

As for State of Decay, I loved it for a short period, and talked it up here, but then hated it. It got too overwhelming. I don't like games that force important decisions over more than 20 hours - added replayability gets meaningless for me after that point. State of Decay probably wouldn't have had that problem, but they had a serious bug while I played in that you constantly had urgent warnings going off. You'd have 5 or 6 at once, but only be able to handle 1. Do you save someone, but you don't know who it is. Do you go see new survivors? Do you go help people calling you? Too many things to do without time to do it (they since fixed a bug that had it hitting you with everything at once.) Compound that with my group growing and shrinking without me knowing who was coming and going or why and I just grew tired of it. But I got my cash worth, and with that bug fixed, I'd probably like it a ton more.

Incredible game. There's just nothing like it and the scope will be enormous. Will take time, but will be worth every step of the way.

...So I was looting some town in the dark of night, far North of Elektro. The wind rustling through the bushes beneath the trees. Faint sounds of wildlife stirred my nerves under the moonlight. The sound of my footsteps upon the wooden floor, creaking ever too loudly.
I crept out from a shanty town house and nearly fell out of my chair. The screams of zombies beyond the door shattered my nerves. Through the window, I could have swore I seen a survivor. Their flashlight beam reflecting off the wall. Much like my blood as the zombies tore at my skin. Unconscious, I became. Respawn.

Aaaaand... sold! I'll give it a go.

There are a handful of these. State of Decay for the SP take on it. But the genre is quite good and to me, it's replaces my MMO fix.

Um.... NO. Do you always project your ideas on others like that?

So a zombie is not going to try and gnaw your arm? Take a bite out of your body?

He's just going to run up to you, stop, flail his arms? That is it? That breaks any immersion of being hounded by zombies.

I'm with your reply in general, but I could argue Zombies break immersion in general. To be honest I don't know what a zombie would do. Maybe they would simply ask for a gentlemens game of checkers. I would however assume I have to shoot them in the head, but I could be wrong about that.

doesnt matter? apparently they are just window dressing for a open world fps pvp game with permadeath? yay?

Pretty much. A sidebar.

Anyone else having this problem? If this were the mod I'd suspect the server of being at fault for not spawning gear, but no matter which servers I try it's still the same. An occasional rotten orange here or there, or maybe a broken M4 in a barracks, but really very little else.

Dean said that the loot doesn't respawn at the moment. Im sure it will be fixed soon

Currently my experience seems to be empty houses for as far as I can see. You can go into just about any house now, but it doesn't matter because there's never anything inside. I know Rocket said that he was going to make scavenging harder in Standalone, but I've died from hunger/thirst three times now. In the whole time I've played the game, I've found precisely two cans of sardines.

It's always been meant as a survival game, and the zombie apocalypse is pretty much just an excuse for the environment to be what it is. They cranked up the difficulty with the standalone so much, just in terms of basic scavenging and sustaining yourself, that people's attitudes have drastically changed (at least for now). You're much less likely to risk going around guns a-blazing because of how hard you've worked to keep yourself alive long enough to find some weapons and ammo. So more complicated and realistic survival mechanics (like needing to purify water and sterilize medical supplies, test your blood to make sure that transfusion will help rather than hurt) combined with a larger and more dynamic zombie threat (not implemented yet, in fact the zombies have been toned down just to test out the other stuff) will make this much less of a deathmatch game compared to before. Basic crafting is already in, but that will be expanded greatly all the way up to building fortifications and digging out underground bunkers and shit...

The planned features list is fucking bananas, and to expect everything to be ready for the first alpha release is naive and shortsighted, to say the least. Opening it up to the general public is just the next stage of testing performance, basic gameplay mechanics, entity spawning behavior, controls, graphics, etc.

Man, nothing but negative comments from not a single person who's actually given the standalone a chance. I was skeptical at first but after playing till 5AM last night all I want to do is go home and play some more.

Tidbits-

You can customize your character with helmets, different clothes, sneakers, gloves.

Patch has already been released addressing several issues

For an Alpha I havent had any problems with unplayable bugs/glitches.

30$ is to be part of the process to build and grow the game (anyone remember how fun it was following Desert Combat mod?!)

You can watch this guy playing for a taste:

I know this is because they are using the ArmA 2 engine which did not develop for such actions. It just is too glaringly un-zombielike that it harms the attraction of the game.

Ummmmm no, the psychologically scary part of zombies are that they just don't stop they keep coming and coming as their numbers keep growing.

you'd prolly want a QTE while the zombie is tackling you also, right?
