7 Days to Die Early Access

Here's more Early Access on Steam, where 7 Days to Die is now available in beta form, offering the chance to play this "survival horde crafting game." Here's the deal: "Building on survivalist and horror themes, players in 7 Days to Die can scavenge the abandoned cities of the buildable and destructable voxel world for supplies or explore the wilderness to gather raw materials to build their own tools, weapons, traps, fortifications and shelters. In coming updates these features will be expanded upon with even more depth and a wider variety of choices to survive the increasing dangers of the world. Play alone or with friends, run your own server or join others."

All our (college age) kids played Minecraft and tried to get us into it.
Perhaps I just never gave it a fair shake, but it felt too free-form.

There most likely is some set of Mods that would make it just our thing.
I will have to look at the ones proposed.

Ironically we both have longtime careers in IT, and when we play games have the least amount of patience for messing around with configuring them.

Since I have long used Blue comments to gauge interest in game, let me add my 2 cents.

My wife and I were looking for a 'builder' to play co-op, and this has been the best for us so far. Any other suggestions are always appreciated though!

7DTD has provided that mixture of challenge along with purpose to keep things interesting.

Minecraft (Space Engineers, Blockscape, etc) feel to open without a point to them.

Dayz (Nether, Rust) feel too PvP and we are more PvE-centric.

Terraria (Starbound) Sorry have been playing 2D since the 70's. And its hard to go back.

CubeWorld, StarForge, Planet Explorers are all possibilities. Just waiting for them to flesh out more.
Looking for the same thing to play with my partner.

How is 7DTD better than Minecraft? Have you tried the millenaire mod?

thats a good mod to mix with others.. especially this: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/2011841-thaumcraft-405b-updated-24112013/

or you could just do the "yogbox" thing and combine a bunch

Thanks! Actually just cracked that open after recent Steam sale.
Unfortunately it is not co-op, so only play while wife is away.

State of Decay is a very good game, since you came in here to read about a zombie game. Last patch addressed the mouse control nicely. But what a well done game.

It boggles my mind that they went with a "realistic" style for characters, zombies, vehicles, etc but opted for block voxels over smooth voxels... dafuq?!?

It was a budget constraint at first, I'm sure, as it's simply easier to do cubes. But they did hit their final stretch goal on Kickstarter for $500k, which includes smoothing the terrain. But like the $400k and $450k goals (NPCs, voice actors, character customization), that stuff is being saved for post-release updates rather than delaying the game.

As for the price, this is yet another example of a Kickstarted game showing up on early access where the alpha version costs more than the final game will in the spirit of fairness. You'll get it for $15 or less at launch...

It's still very early, but this game is already leaps and bounds above many others that get thrown up there on Steam EA, including that other more realistic Minecraft clone, Starforge. I picked that up last summer and it was utterly unplayable, and from what I've heard it still hasn't gotten much better. 7 Days to Die is at least functioning as a sandbox survival game and is receiving rapid content and polish updates.
